    Default Still worth picking up?

I've only played Medieval 2 of the total war series and I'm waiting for Empire and I'm think about getting Rome to pass the time but is it still worth getting?

Yes but to save some money you could just download a mod on M2TW or pick up Kingdoms which is $19.99 download (?? price on actual disc). I would suggest Stainless Steel 4.0 if you don't have kingdoms and 6.1 if you do.

Only for the mods. Rome TW is nothing without the mods. I reinstalled Rome and immediately donwloaded and installed Roma Surrectum, then embarking a great campaign in the east as the Parthian menace.

Same goes for Med2. I'm playing Broken Crescent, trying to install the Pax Turkolica (sp?) upon the eastern world.

I disagree with DB Cooper, Rome is a much better vanilla game than Med2. I still go back and play rome vanilla istead of mods quite a bit. It is certainly worth picking up, great game, graphics aren't bad and the time period is probably the best so far. Definitly worth the 20$.

I don't know if this is still true, but when i pre-ordered Empire from Steam, i got Rome gold for free. It would be worth looking at if you're waiting for empire and want some Romage.

    It's definitely worth it.
Rome was a really solid vanilla game.
    I think you'll enjoy.
And it's not true that it's nothing without the mods, rome vanilla is extremely fun, only if played creatively.

Definitely. A lot of M2 players have come back to Rome - and the mods are very diverse, numerous, and more developed (they'd had longer!) than M2 ones.

You should be able to pick up RTW Gold (includes BI) and other deals for cheaper than has been stated in this thread. I bought RTW Gold for about £8 over a year ago (Amazon). I should think 10 Euros or $15 is the max you should find it these days.

Definitely worth it. Really cheap and the mods kick M2 out the window.

Mods are definetaly the best part, but I'd recommend playing a short campaign in vanilla at least before delving into the wide world of modding.

tbh i just re-installed Rome today (well..yesterday...its 2:30 am) and i've really been enjoying it. i only played it a little when i first got it, and didn't really get into TW until Medieval 2 (which is addictive 0_o)

anyway, to answer your question, yes, it's worth getting. VENI, VIDI, VICI, FOR ROME!!!

Yup. The reason we are in the RTW General Discussion area of the TOTAL WAR CENTER!!! is to nag at the game.

In other words, buy it. Or I'll send an ancestral ghost at you.

Great game, definately worth it. Vanilla is not bad, it has greatly done Egypt (looking like from Old Kingdom times) nation, cose frankly all mods have historically accurate Ptolemeic Egypt that is yet -another- phalangite faction which is boring. But when you play as other faction, some mods are really great.

Despite being several years old already, Rome: Total War is still worth playing and purchasing. As others have pointed out already, there are plenty of great modifications for RTW and its expansion which you should definitely try. Europa Barbarorum, Rome Total Realism, Roma Surrectum and many other mods are immensely fun and make buying RTW worth it by themselves. Furthermore, Rome features a different time perior than Medieval 2: Total War so it will certainly be a different and unique experience.

While RTW's graphics can't match those of M2TW, the game is just as fun and enjoyable. Some might even argue that the gameplay is 'smoother' in RTW. On top of that, most modifications overhaul and improve the textures and models significantly, so the gap between the two games is not big. Therefore, as long as you do not mind that the soldiers in one unit look the same, I would definitely advise you to give RTW a try. Especially for those interested in that time perior the game is a must-have.

Last but not least, Rome is rather cheap at the moment so trying it cannot hurt.
