I was just playing around with Google earth today and looking at some possible ideas for textures and took a load of screenshots. It'd be interesting to see whether these worked:
Presumably these have got to be able to tile?

I think that it would be very interesting to try out.

Best thing to do is just try them and see how they look. They don't 'necessarily' tile because of the way the trrain is mixed up anyway. But avoid anything with a river in it

OK, this is a wip - I've worked on the sandy and rocky desert and semi-arid textures - beginning to get somewhere I think.
There are a few glitches still and a few corrections to the map files I think it would be worth making.
1) I don't think the semi-arid cliomate should extend any further south than the Atlas mountains in the western part of north Africa (picture 4)
2) I think the mountains next to the red sea have probably got the wrong climate - I would suggest that they shouldn't have snow on (do they have an alpine climate or something? - they certainly don't appear to have a desert one) - picture 6

Thanks. Part of the problem is knowing which textures are where - there tends to be a bit of mixing around of climates going on even within a region.
Obviously there's the descr_aerial_map_ground_types.tga and map_climates.tga, but a lot of it ends up being trial and error.
DVK, another thing I've noticed is that the central part of Spain ought to be significantly more arid than it currently is, although ideally not with loads of palm trees.
The very southern part of pain has the converted 'sub_arctic' climate, which mixes palms and other trees.....mostly below the mountains that run along there. There is a choice in Spain, other than that, of usinf infertile_grass, test_climate or fertile grass...but the problem is that both 'grass' climate have a 'winter'. It isn't really appropriate for that part of Spain except in the higher elevations.
I have been working on map_ground_types.tga to straighten out problems....one thing is, as you say, removing 'snowy mountain' ground types from Persian areas, Arabia, etc.
I really like the new textures...but I would request that the file names all have an 'rs_' in front of them like the existing ones. It's just far easier to keep track of them.
I'll fix the semi_arid business in Africa.

Yeah, they're all getting RS(climate)_(type of ground).tga as their name (or at least once finished).
I forgot to turn off fog of war with those pics so the reality is somewhat better (brighter). I've been working on the default climate (temperate), in particular thinking about the steppes. Again we probably need a little bit changing there with the transition from the steppes down todards Parthia - may a bit of semi-arid or whatever you think needs to be there to make it work - at the moment it's a little sudden....although I'm only using one grass texture at teh moment and it may improve with the 3 different degrees of fertility.

Those new textures definitely improve the map.
Also glad you found how to toggle fow off as the first set were a bit dark.......![]()

The darker colours of the arid / desert areas really are a big improvement.
I've personally never been a big fan of the clouds appearing on the surface of the sea - as shown in the Greek shot. This maybe caused by the clouds being huge in comparison to how large they would really be.

In my opinion the new textures look absolutely fantastic. +rep
I don't like the clouds on the water effect either.

Tone, is there anything you can't do?

That looks fantastic. If you can point out some problem areas, I'll go into map_ground_types and see what I can to. I've been working 'west to east' on the file. Also, I'm assuming the Atlas mountains are the chain around\below Numidai and Carthage?
