And so at last, this dark chapter of communist rule-of-the-gun in our area of the Black Sea comes to a close. This territorial dispute all started in 1948 when the Soviet Union forcefully occupied a part of our territory in the sea. Today Romania has regained most of its land thanks to the norms of international justice and civilized debate. Thank you International Court of Justice!

The Romanian government is already launching intelligence bids and surveys for these resources. The International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled Tuesday in the dispute between Romania and Ukraine on maritime delimitation in the Black Sea and established a single boundary delimiting the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones of each country.
Romania’s agent with the Court, Bogdan Aurescu, said the ruling grants Romania 9700 square kilometers of exclusive economic zone, accounting for 79.34% of the disputed surface.
"The decision the Court read today recognizes Romania’s sovereign jurisdiction and sovereign rights for a continental shelf and exclusive economic zone of 9,700 square kilometers, that is 79.34% of the disputed area,” Aurescu said.
The area contains about 70 billion cubic meters of gas and 12 million tons of oil, he added.

The resources however are not the big thing; Romania produces the same amount every three years. The big thing is that this territorial dispute, which has for a very long time acted as an affront to international justice and the recognition of territorial borders, is finally resolved. Furthermore, Ukraine has gained something too. An important first step to entering NATO is solving territorial disputes with your neighbors, so this is a good first step for Ukraine.![]()
