    Default Health and safety madness

Another example of the Health and safety idiots. Not content with telling music teachers they must wear ear muffs to protect their hearing from danage caused by the children playing their musical instrements.

Now it seems that any snow in Britain causes widespred panic amongst the Health and safey idiots. And the closure of schools everywhere, even a small amount of snow is enough.

They will say their is a risk to the children, well life is a bloody risk eventually it kills everybody.

Believe it or not, snow can actually seriously injure people if it melts and then re-freezes, because it becomes slippery ice, especially when the pavement is sloped or on a hill. Elderly people have actually died because of it. And if the boiler freezes over that can also cause serious problems.

This is nothing like forcing music teachers to wear earmuffs or some silly law like that, some PC/health and safety laws are actually useful and sensible. Newpapers like the Mail just pick extreme examples in order to try and make people believe that the whole system is like that.

The reason schools close isn't because health and safety regulation. It's because teachers and students like to play in it. It's been happening for decades now stop whining and go enjoy the national skive.

There are other reasons to... serious reasons...
as our local authorty's can never cope with a couple of inches snow, its incredibly hard for staff and students alike to get to school. Rather than have a school with a handful of staff and few pupils and try and mix and match to get even some work done, its easier to close the schools. With all of London's transport gone to pieces, how were people supposed to get to school for example?

My agencies Cardiff office was expecting to be shut today, because over 3/4 of their staff live on public transport routes that come from the Valley's and it was expected that heavy snow in the valleys would make it impossible for most staff to get to work.

This isn't so much a health and safety issue, but we do seriously need to ask ourselves why a couple of inches of snow manages to bring the countries entire transport infrastructure to a standstill. Was it the wrong kind of snow?

I live in Austin, Texas, and we have the same problem here as it sounds like is occurring in GB. Not quite as bad, since we have a handful of sandtrucks in the metro area of well over a million population, but no snowplows.

It will sprinkle a little snow here maybe once a year, and maybe ice up the same number of times. In other words, very rare, like in England.

The question is one of cost-effectiveness. Is it beneficial to pay the monies necessary for the equipment and labor to offset the loss of shutting down for a day or two.

I usually just hunker down with my favorite computer game (usually a TW title) and enjoy the day off.

Err, for me, this is a good thing. You know how frustrating it was to be forced to breathe smoke when I wanted to eat out?

But, most health & safety laws are plain ridiculous and are mainly just there to prevent sue-ing.

snow (less than a foot) doesn't shut down infrastructure. its the ice that gets you once that snow melts a little and freezes again.

It is my great honour to have my poem Farmer in the Scriptorium here.

Heh, Brits be funny. Tell me, when you Brits go to bed at night do you hide under the covers?
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. - James Madison

Yes i read the Daily Mail and i know they print articles just to get you to react to them. I usually ignore them but the thought of teachers in music class wearing ear muffs was just too silly. We even had a teachen on the radio saying the childern would laugh at him if i wore ear muffs in class.

Nothing wrong with some of the health and safety things like seat belts. Its just that the Health and safety seem to want to cover each and every possible safety risk. Hell life is a risk there are probably 20 ways to injure yourself just getting out of bed and getting washed.

Justice i sometimes do think thats what we are supposed to do accoring to health and safety. Stay under the covers all day in case we get out of bed and hurt ourselves.

I stopped taking you seriously after the 'Yes I read the Daily Mail'. Please source so we can have fun tearing apart the laughable journalism on show.

    @Justice and Mercy-

So you think this is actually accurate? At least we didn't hide under the covers for two years when a World War was going on.

See? anyone can make a cheap jibe.
