    Default Navies

Hello all, I just felt like starting a discussion about how we all organize and use our navies in RTW. Stuff like, how many boats and what kind you have in ports, what kind of navies you have in the ocean fighting others, ideal blockading navies, etc. Just felt it might be a useful discussion to those of us who are a bit inept at it.

I do the following: if a settlement has a port, I try to build five biremes if the population can support it. Once the port is upgraded to a shipwright, I supplement the original five biremes with four triremes. Then, once it becomes a dockyard, I add another four quinquiremes to the navy. I haven't played as the Scipii in a while, and never play as the barbarians, so that is how my navies are typically organized.

I usually do not have any fleets out in the open waters. If there are enemy navies within range and of lesser power than mine, which is usually the case because I play on Medium campaign difficulty, I will sail out from port, attack them, and then sail back to port for near-immediate retraining. If I need to transport an army overseas, I just use the city's navy to sail them to their destination, and then sail it back home. At most I'll have one big navy out in the waters, killing other fleets, but I usually only do this if a city is not doing anything and could use the population decrease.

I usually don't blockade ports unless I find myself with ships that I don't know where they belong near an enemy port, or my navy can't move much toward its home port after dropping off an army; in this case I'll blockade the port that my army is about to take.

Now, there really isn't any objective to this thread, other than to sit down and...and have a little chat, let's say. So...how do you use your navy?:hmmm:

I just use it to break blockades. As Carthage, in XGM, I make my navy a priority and my mission is to blockade every Roman port in existence. Otherwise its pretty minor.

I usually use 5 units of Triremes, maybe a quinquireme or something in there too. The AI doesn't usually use more than 2 or 3 in a stack, so 5 will win every time.

I only ever use navies when it is faster to create a fleet and ship an army across a stretch of sea, than it is to make the army march to it. Otherwise, my uses for it are rather small.

My Lord makes good use of his navy, and he enjoys how quickly a powerful navy can be built. Just recently a slew of pirates and Carthaganians crippled his Roman navy. It took very little time for my Lord to retaliate.

It has been a long time since the city of Carthage has seen a shipment of goods.

I actually, never use navies, unless i already have one or have to create one for transportation of units (you know, the way from rome to egypt is a long walking way )

for some factions and especially in certain mods navies are crucial because seatrade brings alot more moolahs than land trade. whether it is blockading another faction or defending blockades i always build a strong navy with those factions. mass blockading is a very powerful war weapon even more so than killing a stack.

Now, while walking down the African coast oneday looking for Paraetonium (MM city west of Alexandria), I came across the city's fishing village. I found that if I walked my soldiers on the fishing village itself, a blockade around the village appeared, similar to one that would appear when blockading a port with a navy.

Does anyone know anything about this, like if you can do it to ports and shipwrights with armies, if there is a different effect or magnitude between blockading with soldiers or navies, and what the benefits of blockading a fishing village are, if any (because I assume there's no sea trade there anyway)?
