Default You are not my King!

I had an interesting battle (a couple of them actually) recently as the TO against Norway. The attacking general, who was attacking me at Oslo, I learned after the fact had rebelled against the king (i.e. had the "You are not my King!" trait).

The general himself was halfway decent, with 4 or so command points and a few points of dread. He brought a very intimidating full stack of Norsemen with him. I had just over a half stack myself. What was interesting though, was how quickly the formidable attacking army decided to turn tail and run. The 4 or so units of Icelandic Axemen who had scaled the walls with their ladders, stayed only to get in a few pot shots before routing. There was a similarly token effort to break in through the gate, before everyone ran for it, including the general himself, and I had gained a clear victory with about 75% of numerically suprerior attacking army still in fighting shape. I have never caught so many prisoners in a battle before!

In another attack from the same general, I had destroyed one of the battering rams with my newly built balista towers, and the attackers sent all of their infantry to their ladders and siege towers. This time the general routed without ever having approached the castle walls. It was pretty hilarious actually!

Oh, and the other hiliarious thing was that every city/castle this guy govererned had like a -12% population growth, the population was rioting, and the settlement eventually went rebel. This guy's still quite young, and I noticed that the AI now just keeps him hanging out just outside their capital. I wonder if he'll get back into the action at some point! He's a real hoot!

I wonder if their quick routing is because of the "You are not my King" trait. Maybe so that if the player has a general with that trait and still tries to use him in battle, it makes it 100x harder because he doesn't want to follow your orders? :hmmm:

That seems to be the case. And in fact, the general has several traits that actually BOOST troop morale, so I can only assume that his soliders' piss poor morale is due to the You are not my King trait. I didn't think to get a screenshot of his army's mass rout, but can probably get one posted of the general himself.

On the other hand, the generals who are loyal to the king are uber loyal, and their armies seem to fight with great determination.

You are not my king gives -15 to morale and -10 to command. With that morale penalty most units would run if they see another unit or get shot at. I think it's amazing that he got those axemen up the ladders

surely once a general has rebelled he should not be so useless? When he does rebel the You Are Not My King! Trait should turn to I Have No King!, giving a morale and dread bonus, as his men would be more likely to stay together after rebelling for fear of the noose, and an oathbreaker would be pretty desperate, and nasty..

I think that the idea is that the rebels are causing division and turmoil within the empire. Making the rebel general more effective really would only serve to make the empire stronger. I guess there's only so much you can do within the limits of the engine, but in my opinion, this is a cool novelty that's been built in.

I had one in a recent England Campaign. Waited until the King died, he is now a high-loyalty Crown Prince

Yeah, that's the key to ending this: the king must die. So if this happens to you, and you're not up for a whacky new challenge, find some way to get your king killed.
