    Default Dull life?

How many of you ever find your life, your place in the world or your existence dull? It seems to me that in our time, people are too confined to their homes and dull repetition of pointless life sustaining tasks to truly enjoy life. Some people only seem to live because they simply can. I think there must be some greater joy out there that only a few people attain. What brings joy to your lives? The kind of joy that will make a life worth living...
"I have not escaped punishment, as some may imagine; I am punished every hour I live for the folly of my life, and what it drove me to do. My enemy and I were mined from the same mortal seam; cast into the same furnace of creation, our images impressed on opposite sides of the same coin, separate, but not distinct, conjoined by some fatal alchemy. I killed him; but in doing so, I killed the best part of myself." -E.G.

    Alcohol.

In all honestly, I have been thinking of becoming a vagabond and back packing as far as my feet will take me.

Routine and modern twentieth century neuroticism was one of the things that first introduced me to philosophy. When you're that bored you really get to thinking about why.

Course then you start appreciating things. I would say what makes me most happy now is the special things that I know and the special people I know. The fact that we're all different and anyone can be anything really brings you up.

That is a lie. I see many people, and many people are very much similar and the same. And many people cannot be what they want to be.

In fact our entire society is based around the principle that people can't be what they want to be. The apotheosis of this is 'the american dream' of wealth and power, typified by the idea anyone can be president. If each of us aspires to live this dream, nmost of us are bound to fail due to the very nature of corporate capitalism. In the past normal people weren't lied to in this way. Maybe the horribe amount of mental health problems in the west and particularly the US has something to do with this ultra-competitve and existentially doom laden ideology.

Most people throughout history didn't have the education or time to become bored.
The opportunity to experience malaise is civilization's greatest gift; the actual experience is civilization's greatest curse.

The gods are just, and of our pleasant vices. Make instruments to plague us.

The ones who lost the campaign simply didn't want to be president enough.

At Visigoth, I would very much like to see a pair of humans who are pretty much the same. Identical twins may come close, but even they vastly differ from each other. I would think it rather impossible for two completely unrelated people to be the same. As to the wanting bit, again, I would consider that those people don't want what they want to be enough. I can't imagine many people have these linear wants though, like becoming president. I imagine many people have more complicated dreams, but can't really articulate them.

Avoid TV and nurture inexpensive pleasures.

Anyway, people that say they have a happy life are overgeneralising in the same way as those who claim it's dull. Just ignore them.

Also, life never seizes to amaze me

Chinese curse. And its not true in the slightest, depending on what you consider interesting.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.

A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."

    yarO,

Some people find contentment in doing the same routine day in and day out without the feeling of losing out. That I cannot understand as speaking for myself I had no educational qualifications at all so therefore had to graft for every position I ever held and I must admit to finding that exhilarating.

Traveling, mainly by vagabonding is what brought so much joy into my life. I just loved mingling with locals, playing music and experiencing their thoughts, culture, beliefs, terrain etc...However both of my knees gave out again (3rd time) and now I am stuck. It's pretty much a perpetual hell, and there's no guarantees that my legs will get better again, I'm trying as hard as I can now....if I cannot get them better, then I suppose I'll embark on one final epic adventure that will most likely result in my death. (It's very hard to vagabond while in bad health)

Neighbours in Ireland don't know each other like they used to. My mother is very nostalgic about the past.

I am an athletic person, and was on the wrestling team for 4 years, it was fun, but I would always hate old men telling me what to do and showing up to practice every day. So I quit the team (10th grade). And I found a gap in my life and so much time on my hands that i didn't know what to do. That's when I found out about parkour, that really takes up my whole life now, I train, practice, stay outside late in any sorts of weather and just rough it out with my friends. That whole life style of being an outdoors man, andventurer brings joy to my life. I try to live by the basic philosophy of parkour. Strong mind, strong body, strong man.
I guess what it all boils down to is just finding something you truly love and trying to constantly excel and improve in it, having a goal somehow gives me joy, because seeing yourself improve and inch towards your goal is an incredible feeling.

Edit: Yes, basically traveling with as little things as possible, and with a good friend by your side is something that brings me joy

    yar0,

That was a shame, because old men always have something of value to say. To watch and listen leads to knowledge and if ambitious, power, so don't knock the old guys.

The only reason life is dull is because you're not enjoying it.

You could say if you have a dull life then you yourself are just a dull kind of person.
