Default Names and the cheat console

I've been trying to add a few traits via the give_trait command and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the internal name of my character is. I've tried every combination I could find using the desrc_names file and all I get is "character not found". Is there any way around this?

You'll have to find out what his name is...
What is the name you're having trouble with? Different faction's names work different ways in the codes.

Sorry, I should have been more specific

It's for the Romani faction. The name is Lvcivs Ivlivs Caesar. I've tried Lvcivs IvlivsCaesar, Lvcivs Romanvs, LvcivsA Romanvs, etc.. and nothing has worked so far.

For the Romans, the last name is always Romanvs. And the first name would be Lvcivs, LvcivsA, LvcivsB, ... ,LvcivsK. Remember to put quote marks around the name so it is something like:

    give_trait "LvcivsC Romanvs" GoodTactician 1

    Ah, thanks.

I was writing the line backwards - trait before name.

However, it seems as if the code gave the trait to another Lvcivs and adding a letter after the name doesn't seem to help in getting the trait to the correct Lvcivs.

I'm having the same problem with AS, e.g. Seleukos Prienes Ionikes, mind take a look?

It seems as though the game doesn't recognize any name other than the first instance of that name, ex - GnaevsB, LvcivsC, PvblivsA, etc... are no good but the names without the last letter are fine - Gnaevs, Lvcivs, Pvblivs, etc.

Is there any reason why the game wouldn't recognize these types of names?

Everybody with the name Lvicivs could have the internal name of "Lvcivs", "LvcivsA", "LvcivsB, ... , "LvcivsK", but not necessarily would you have all of them or in any kind of order. If using a cheat, it is best to test to find out what the guy's actual name is with a harmless cheat such as "character_reset" then the one you want.

It is possible for two characters to have the exact same internal name. In such a case, the game will only be able to cheat for one of them. If you want to cheat for the other guy, you'll have to kill off the one the game chooses.

That must be it because I've tried everything to find out the character's name. I usually only use it for character_resets, but I keep missing the Marian reforms because I don't have a Sharp/Charismatic/Vigorous, Popularis, Consul so I'd hoped to just make my own.

What's frustrating is that it's like this for all my characters. None of the "nameA - nameK" names work when using cheats despite the fact that I have multiple Lvcivs, Gnaevs, Pvblivs, Tiberivs, etc...

RTW can be very odd sometimes.

Okey i have the same problem an it does not work. I try it exactly as discribed but my consol find no single Char of my Romans. I try it with the starting characters of 272 bc. Any other ideas what could be wrong?

Is there nobody who knows how to do that correct?

To give him skilled bureaucrat you would put in

    give_trait "Titus Romanvs" GoodAdministrator 4

Not sure if the trait is in quotes as well. For expert recruiter you would put in

    give_trait "Titus Romanvs" GoodRecruiter 2

Again, I believe you have to put the traits in quotes, but I'm not sure. Try it with and without. Also, you spelled Tacitian wrong. It's supposed to be Tactician. You must have the letters exactly right for it to work.

Use the section about identifying characters in Guide: How to use 'move_character' in EB to get the right internal name.

It becomes clear that EB was not designed with console cheats in mind ;D

Try as I might, I cannot edit some characters via console

    E.g. "Spvrivs P Carbo"

Instead it adds the trait to a spy called Spvrivs P someonelse

Damn romans and their 3 names...
