if your talking about you get bored of the game and want to sell it on say ebay (blasphemy btw) i believe you can just take the game off your steam and all that good nonsense before you sell it. basically terminate its relation with your steam account

About mods, I have read and understood that it will work fine since everyone has the same version. Sweet, no more faulty installations

But: Let's say I work 3 months on my E: total realism for the 1.2 version of Empires. I then release it and everyone is happy, but the day after the release STEAM finds and installs 1.3 on everyones computers. Wouldn't that totally mess my mod up?

    Bump.
Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.

I don't have ETW, neither planning to get it..but just for your info

on Steam, you can get ETW for $24.99 like RIGHT NOW. I think it's a special price and it won't last ..or whatever, i don't know.

So there's no way to run the game online at some point tomorrow and NOT get the 1.3 update?

Steam will definitely auto download it ?

Run the game online? I think its going to get patched. I have been told you can tell it not to download a patch somehow, but since the download starts immediately, by the time you tell it to stop it will have already started and then it wont let you play the game until its done.

You can start Steam in offline mode and play without patching ..... offline.

Well you can cancel the update. And then run it in offline mode. It's what I'd recommend, until the modders update the mod.

Concerning game-updates/patches: you can switch off auto-update quite easily for each individual game on Steam.

Edit: Also potentially useful: you can set different launch options in Steam.

Steam are probaly never going to be shut down and thank god for that... I love that im not going to go to the stores and see the game i want to buy isnt in the store anymore and go disappointed home. I remember i played CS CZ (Counter Strike Condizion Zero) as a child when Steam was brand new, today you can buy almost every single game there! E:TW, Spore, Garry's Mod (I only think you can buy that over Steam and these 3 Steam games aint from Valve though GM is a mod to Half Life 2.)

This was very much needed. Even though I've seen these answers before, it's about time someone put them all in the first post of a dedicated thread. Thank you.

I've seen it sold in plenty of places for much less than the steam price. But then again I'm suffering from the 1€!=1$ problem.

And as the Retail version will work exactly the same as the Steam version, you might aswell go with the cheaper option.

This is not exactly about Empire: Total War, but it is about Valve, the people behind Steam. I think this is a clear example of why Steam will be no problem, if the company behind is so supportive of the community. They decided that the DLC (Downloadable Content) for their hitgame Left 4 Dead will be completely free of charge. How about that for something that could have earned them millions.

"February 11, 2009 — The recently announced Left 4 Dead Downloadable Content (L4D DLC) will be delivered to Xbox 360 and PC gamers free of charge.

Due for release this spring, the DLC for 2008's best-selling new game property on the PC and Xbox 360, is dubbed the L4D Survival Pack and introduces a new multiplayer game mode entitled, Survival, plus two complete campaigns for Versus Mode (Death Toll, Dead Air). A Critic's Choice Edition of the game will be heading to retail stores this spring, and will include access to all the content introduced in the L4D: Survival Pack.

Left 4 Dead is a survival action game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games. Released in November of 2008, L4D has earned over 25 industry awards from outlets around the world."

Too bad L4D still doesn't support LAN play without multiple copies, but bow to the overlords for not charging money for what should have been in the full game from the beginning, sans survival mode. It didn't really make sense to restrict competitive MP to just two of four maps at release

Dead Air and Death Toll were to open and too glitchy to be played in Versus, it wasnt a case of them not wanting to put them in. It was either leave them out and delay the game or get the game released and patch them in later.

Pretty much what CA have done with the MP in Empire.

^I was focusing more on the fact that they shouldn't be charging money for it anyway, so why should they be praised for making it free.

Because there were rumors of it costing something, and Micro$oft was forcing them to make it cost something on the Xbox 360, but they stopped.
