Overcoming the "this item is unavailable in your region problem".

I'm based in Japan and got the above error message when I tried to download. (It's curious because people in nearby Taiwan are downloading with no problems)

    Solution is:
    1. Download and install steam
    2. Open a web browser and paste in the following: steam://run/10620
    3. Watch the install run!

    Solution was found here: http://game.ali213.net/archiver/tid-2598510.html

Could anybody tell me how to uninstall games from Steam please? Is it just right click and 'Delete local content...'?

Yeah thats all it is. Then just go to your Steam folder and clean up anything related to Empire. You'd find that in the SteamApps/common/ folder.

Beware people with slow net connection!

I can only get dial up where I live, there's no other option.

I recently bought DOW2 (ETW will use the same activation system) as a DVD because I can't download from Steam, seeing the text on the box saying "internet connection required for registration" I thought this is not so bad as I have other games that require a simple once only code to be entered online.
When installing the game Steam looks to see if the version is up to date, if it is not it will NOT LET YOU PLAY until the game is patched. The patch for DOW2 (ETW will be the same) is not available anywhere else but on Steam and not available for individual download.

You must have the machine the game is installed on connected to Steam so it can update it, there's no other way.

So at present if I want to play DOW2, when I try to start the game Steam tells me that it will be ready to play in 18 hours.

Once you patch it once, you can turn off the automatic updates and play offline, but for the installation process if a patch is available before you buy or install and your on a slow pc, it may be an extremely frustrating time.

Please CA make all patches available as standalone downloads, so people like me can download updates from another computer where the game may not be installed.

Not sure I get where you're coming from on that one champ.:hmmm:

A better guess might be that they've not done the translation yet.

does anyone know the point of requiring Steam when an actual disk is purchased? what's the benefit for CA?

It will hopefully restrict piracy, and the MP servers are the best around; they need decent ones for the upcoming MP campaign. It's also easy to patch, gets the community together, and makes them a heap in publicity.

I can tell you right now that it will not restrict any piracy

I disagree. Seen as Steam's CD key policy is required for online, the possibility of online play on a pirated copy is hugely restricted, especially as ETW is using Steam's servers to host on.

I would like you to expand on that... Any system might not be fool proof but cd keys being assigned to accounts that have to be validated online certainly will restrict privacy.

It will be especially effective on multi player online games.

Online play isn't really the largest factor in ETW, and even if it were, cracked servers would run rampant in no time. Piracy will be pretty much the same, especially considering the relative piracy of L4D, a game dedicated in majority to online multiplayer

perhaps clarity is required, i meant that Steam will offer no more protection than would be available by any other mainstream DRM (securom, etc). It is fact that the game will be pirated, as all games (MMO's not included) inevitably are. To say that the Steam will provide more protection is more of an exaggeration than truth. Someone will strip away the verification in a matter of days (or less) with programs expressly created to pirate games from steam, I can't list them here, and this version will be made available to any and all over the internet.

I'm probably going crack bypass it too. Multiplayer is unimportant to me.

Kind of a gray area though.

After much rumination I have decided, personally, to draw a line in the sand regarding this Steam business. I'll not be getting ETW unless they release a non-Steam version, which I can't see happening soon.

A game is a game, not a portal to somewhere you don't choose to go. Screw the game, and I am one of the biggest TW fans ever.

lol i just found out you can't resell your hard copy if you ever get fed up with it,as its tied to a steam account that you have to install..............whats up with you people?? your not only making people install spyware like steam but you also preventing people from selling the game in a years time............what greed.............i see this company going the same way as EA and look what people do with ea games.....they try before they don't buy, if you know what i mean.

people have to sell their Steam account with the game it seems. Pity if you have multiple games on your Steam account

Look this just blows. This is my last post on this matter. I'm out.

As far as I know it is against the terms of use to sell or transfer your steam account.

I'm generally for steam but I admit the non re-sell or transfer of a game really sux.

The whole legal blah blah that steam use to say your a "subscriber" not "owner" of the game leaves a bitter taste with me. To say I can not sell my subscription is a load of bs.

I'm for the right of the maker of games to protect their investment and make a profit, that's just normal business and if you and I as players like a game we should pay money for that game. What I do not like is the restriction and legal blah blah that now says I do not own this game but subscribe to it. Therefore I can not sell it. BAH! I should be able to sell my subscription end of story.

This is an obvious money grab which is trying to kill the 2nd hand gaming market, that's all it is. It's not about copyright protection.

And once again it's the honest gamers that pay for it.
