    Default What grinds my gears

Is it just me, or do building ports only ask for trouble? I'm playing as the Turks and right now it seems as though everyone likes to sail all the way to my little nation just to blockade a port, never attack me, but refuse a ceasefire. When the ai finally does decide to offer ceasefire, they usually end up breaking it the next turn with (guess what?) another random blockade for a turn! I don't see what i'm doing wrong, I keep getting betrayed and my reputaion is reliable! Is this a bug, or do open ports cause a nation to have suicidal hate?

Well like small children wanting attention, factions might start a war just to get to talk with you. It may also shuffle up some interlocking alliances where others will need to make a decision on whom to remain allied with.

Be aware of the relations changes and be proactive and not wait for the port blockade. This will not prevent all incidents, but the rate of occurance should decline. Then, it does mean you are now at war, if that was desired. No need to waste a perfectly good diplomatic crisis.

Heh. I've always had problems with keeping friendly relations with factions that I share borders with. No matter what, unless I overpowered them greatly, they would attack me if they found the chance. I don't think ports have much to do with it, they are just another target they can use. But they are generally very useful, generating lots and lots of income.

As soul said, they make you lots of money and you should keep the important ones well defended to guard against random aggression. This happens often unfortunately.

Random and illogical blockades are an inevitable part of not only MTWII, but it was exactly the same with RTW. You can't really "garrison" ports, in the same way you can your settlements so there is little deterrent to even Allied factions deciding to start a war that way. In fact, most wars other factions have started with me have started over a one-turn blockade of one of my ports.

I think most port blockades that start wars are simple responses to an assigned mission. That is, the Pope asks Empire A to blockade Empire B's port. The AI never considers the ensuing chaos.

Hmm interesting idea, guess there is no way to find out what missions the other factions are getting.. although I don't remember getting a lot of blockade port missions in MTW2, they are more frequent in Rome..

Blockade port missions when not already at war??? I do not recall any. I get them usually from the Council when at war.

Just put a ship every other space around the port.

A bit expensive don't you think?

Easier to keep diplomats on station for all diplomatic needs. Build ships in the blockaded port. End the blockade. Enter diplomatic negotiations.

I meant if you were lazy and it was a pot like Sicily, Venice, or Constantinople. (sp)

    Viking Prince--

Yes, I get them. From the Pope, I think. Maybe they're specific to certain mods. Also. if a neutral faction does it to you and starts a war, the blockade will usually end after a couple of turns. Which makes sense as blockade missions only require a couple of turns to complete.

Short answer: Yes, it is asking for trouble. But it's also asking for a lot of money.

I believe there are a couple of mods that cut down on random aggression and make alliances much more reliable. Look around and I'm sure you could find a mod that would help you with this annoying facet to M2TW.

Ships in ports does not prevent Blockades, in my experience, but an army, even with one unit on the port, on the land side will prevent a blockade to even start. If you are worried about rebels, put a unit of peasants, or a Priest in the army. I noticed that Priest in armies will prevent army turn rebels, but Spy will still cause rebels. Never tried with Assassins or Diplomats.
Riddle me this, riddle me that:
    Who was my first commander?
How many of me are active right now?
And who drank a Delacourt '27 when received the commandership of me?

Ships in ports that are under blockade are actually protected from the enemy.

Neutral ships that hang around outside Constantinople blocking my ships from leaving! Esp when I've just build a huge full stack amphibious assault force...
what was that move unit cheat again

Bah, if youve got the navy then just crush any rebels you see. They are good for building up experience.
