    Default Overclocking your GPU!

Have any of you done it? I just upgraded from a HD4850512MB to a GTX260 OC Maxcore.

Problem was however that it did not come OC'd... So I decided to do it myself.

The first is just a measure of GPU performance in Test one, You can see the increase in the top right of the picture where it says "FPS"

I overclocked it from 590 core memory to 720, and the memory clock from 999 to 1140.

my GTX260 is about 10% faster then a GTX280, I got what I paid for!

Do you know any good guide for "How to overclock the gpu"?

    Default Re: Overclocking your GPU!

I can give you some quick tips.

For Nvidia I used EVGA Precision (I guess it works with all Nvidia cards seeing as mien is BFG)

for ATI you can use the built in OverDrive feature in CCC, although I think ATI Tray Tools (ATT) Is better for ATi.

When overclocking try increasing core clock and memory clock by around +5/+10/+15, start off around 15+ and after a few tests try and lower it a bit seeing as every videocard has a choke point so the higher you clock it the higher chance it has of dieing.

By dieing I don't mean catching on fire or anything like that, it'll just most likely restart your PC due to failed OC.

Try and keep track of your overclocks.

If you have any questions just ask.

Yes I have. 9800gtx overclocks beautifully.

    Good results btw.

yup I heard 9800's OC well.... my 4850 would turn off my PC if I oc'd it by even 1MHZ.... .... My GPU score was around 6.1k Before Overclocks (11k after) ... I'll post some more results after I'm finished Overclocking, I just got started

How do you do the overclocking yourself. Does it require special components or just special software?

I plan on buying a Nvidea Gefore 9500GT... will that overclock well as by the looks of it the 9000 series seems to overclock quite well.

It's not the series that overclocks well opposed to the chip within the card itself.

I could have a GTX260 that OC's bad, and one that OC's good.

You can use EVGA Precision to overclock Nvidia cards, its as simple as sliding some sliders

Theres a pic of EVGA Precision.

Your keen, going from a HD 4850 to a GTX260 doesn't seem that big a leap to me and I've always noticed the graphics on ATI cards tend to look a bit better then there Nvidia counterparts.

I'm more then happy with my 8800GT apart from Crysis it plays everything at 1920x1200 smoothly, I do plan on buying Crysis/Warhead at some point this year but I won't bother until ATI gets the HD 5870 out the door and I can see what's that like.

Well Freddie, I sold my 4850 to my friend for 200$ So really I only payed 100 for my GTX260 so that seems like a very good upgrade for the price.

Hell, my 260 came with a free version of 3Dmark Vantage, can't go wrong there!

I'm actually going to go pickup Warhead in about an hour to test this beast out

Nope. Not a fanboy of any sort. I'd happily use either....and have.

It's just that...in my experience, with the specific games that I play...Nvidia cards look a little better to me. The ATI cards I've had tended to artifact and tear slightly...on the games that I play...BUT, I will give them the fact that their color saturation tends to be more vibrant imo.
Then again, I haven't used any of the latest generations of ATI cards either.

Same goes for AMD/Intel. Right now, I'm using AMD...but I still love Intel. I used to be a REALLY hardcore OC'er/and bencher, but now I'm more interested in other things. And if I have a "slower" 3.4Ghz AMD chip...or a "slower" 9800GTX+...I'm perfectly happy with it until it won't do something I want it to do.
I just happened to get a far better deal on the AMD system and Nvidia gpu within the requirements I wanted, and the budget I set.

Hah Yeah, I try and stay away from fanboyism to the best of my ability, nothing makes more more angry then someone saying "NDICKIA NOOBS" or "ATITARDS"

I've never owned a AMD CPU, well...if you want to count my AMD 3200 (lol).... I had that before my E8400 . The reason I like Intel is the overclocking ability of the CPU's, sure their more expensive but your getting a HUGE deal if you OC, If you don't OC I'd just go with AMD, especially the new Phenom II's o.O

To tell you the truth, the "re-working" they did on Warhead does not seem to be much. I played Warhead and it actually seemed to run slower than the Crysis Demo.

Is this GTX 260 the Core 216 model? If it is, it is not new that it runs faster the GTX 280.

    Yes the Core 216.

Except I'm having a small problem.

Games and stuff run fine... but when I start up a game and the Logos flash I get a very loud pinging coming from the videocard like my BROKEN 4850 >_>, The game runs at like 50FPS on Enthusiast graphics without pinging...which only occurs in the intro of the game.... strange?

If I get more problems I'll be replacing this card lol, god damn my luck!

I have heard of this problem before. I think you will have to follow the instructions here.

I tried clocking my GPU today with ATI OverDrives auto-tune feature, the process went good, increased core clock by 110 mhz and memory clock by around 250, and only increased the avg temperature by 3-4 degrees. But, as soon as I started a game, I got these coloured cubes (someone said they're called Artifacs) so I tried decreasing Core clock by about 50 and memory by 100 or something like that, still artifacs but about half as much. Never touching that again, ain't got the money to throw on another card, luckily these artifacs disappeared when I clocked it back to the default.

Did you raise the fan speeds? If so, then you just have a bad card.

Hmm, have a GTX 260 216 core as well. Started out moderately oc'ing eventually raising the core clock (starting at 626) and shader clock (at 1350) to 680 and 1466 respectively with the memery clock up too 1135 using EVGA Precision. At, these levels while running the CoH demo at 1920x1080 and all the numbers showing on screen to track them, I had some buildings go dark on me. Figured it was too much for my particular card to handle so I started lowering everything by 5 again working backwards. Two restarts later, I had seemed to find the lucky numbers I figured, but then about 3 or 4 minutes into the demo, the core clock dropped to about 400 and the Memory clock to about 700 without any adjustments from me obviously. Any thoughts?

No Idea, I havnt had the card long enough to make any good judgment calls

I seem pretty stable right now at 650 Core clock and 1100 Memory clock

Make sure your fanspeed is 60-80%
