    Default broke it again

I seem to have broken my development build again. No idea what I did wrong. I've tried to walk back the changes to the last good setup, but no luck thus far.

For the record, I'm getting errorless CTDs after selecting my faction and pressing the "next" arrow. The campaign doesn't even begin to load. I don't think I've made any changes to any of the map files since the last working setup. Might've been a name, though...

You need subversion to track changes

I was about to say the same. Plus, SVN makes it really easy for a team of people in different locations to work together efficiently and as long as each version makes small changes, conflicting versions are easily resolved (gotta love the inbuilt compare/merge editor).

Don't you have a backup copy of the last working setup? Or perhaps someone else, with whom you might compare files?

Would it have anything to do with the sea regions change you were thinking of? Failing that, do a search for all the files in your working directory that have been changed in the past month, and go through them in order.

No, I don't have a super-recent backup, because I've only made a few minor changes since the last working build on the 27th. That's what's really bothering me. It worked two days before, and I hardly made any changes to it. I mean, I searched the directory for files modified in that period and found maybe 6.

And stop being right about SVN!

    Ok, it's working again.

Fun fact: if you create character Bob in the rebel faction and make him a member of sub_faction People's Liberation Army of Judaea, you need to make sure the that PLAJ section in names.txt has the name "Bob" in it or bad things happen.

Yes, of course, that`s one of the points of the sub_faction part. It uses the names from that faction`s list in descr_names. He`s also taken its culture(which in turn influences how the strat banner of the city looks like for example) and maybe some other things I might have forgotten.

Oh, cool, I didn't know that.

Can any faction besides Slaves use the sub_faction attribute?

Apparently. If you check the vanilla RTRPE descr_strat you`ll see that the seleucids, ptolemaics and others have a character named Elatos that has sub_faction greek_cities. The greeks have a character Aratus with sub_faction greek_cities. There are about 14 of these Elatos in the vanilla RTR 6 ds. Why? Because the name is on the greek_cities list. Why? To me it looks like poor codding and nothing else, but I could be wrong of course. Probably someone used the copy/paste method to increase the armies and then either forgot or was too lazy to remove the sub_faction and look for proper faction names for each general.
The idea being that they don`t crash the game and I don`t know of causing other issues. But I doubt it`s the best way to treat the game`s engine.

Wlesmana came up with the idea of using that deliberately in LotR, if for example you want to make sure faction only ever gets one 'Sauron' - you'd use the sub faction trick to use a name from another factions list. Its most useful if you have a spare faction to mess about with. No idea if there was a reason behind RTR's use though.

And unfortunately I've never worked out a way of getting it to work via spawn_army for a script

That`s actually a good idea. Could be used for a mod like exrm too, but it uses all the faction slots so...
Any other point you know of for using a sub_faction tag on proper faction characters?

only as you said above I think it influences the culture for the character, I think you'd get the sub faction's portrait card but not sure if there's anything else. Maybe useful for someone who's historically meant to have married in from another culture... ?

I believe that the Roman rebels from BI are sub-factions.:hmmm:
Don't quote me on it, though

Interesting...I may try to make use of that for a superfaction, then. Thanks!

Please make a backup of the files beforehand, my memory isn't perfect and I would hate to be the cause of multiple CTDs

Oh, yeah, I remember seeing that, now. I always wondered if that was supposed to represent Ionia or something. I wonder if it causes problems? Maybe that explains Big Blue's Anatolia obsession.

I doubt it was made on purpose. As for issues... when I discovered it in rtrpe I also checked eb and noticed it appears there too. I think they had some diplomats in this situation too. I told TA from eb and he replied something like: thanks! I`ve changed them now. no idea how the game even started with those settings. They put it down to a copy pasting mistake iirc, but still, the point is the game works with them. And just so you know, I`ve changed them with proper seleucid, ptolemaic etc names in my game and nothing bad happened this way either.
