Default Who should America select as the next Afghan President?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...id-Karzai.html

So the Pres Obama is ditching Karzai for a new guy. Dr Abdullah attended the Pres' inaguration and is good friends with some heavy hitting US diplomats.

Dr Abdullah was one of four Afghan politicians who attended President Obama's inauguration ceremony in Washington last week, and is known to be close to Mr Holbrooke.

The Afghan president has become increasingly anti-Western in his comments as his re-election campaign looms ever closer, and has launched a number of attacks on Western-interference in Afghanistan's affairs.

In particular, he has condemned Nato's high number of civilian casualties and the attempt to appoint Lord Ashdown as the UN's 'super-envoy' to galvanise reconstruction work. But it has failed to convince Afghans while further alienating the Western allies who have shored up his regime.

One senior diplomat who recently met the American officials responsible for its Afghan policy said: "They have realised that it is untenable, that the implications of five more years will be catastrophic. Policy is being made as we speak. All [those] I spoke with in [Washington] D.C openly said that it is time to go – established people in the State [Department], National Security Council, Department of Defence," said
Who do you want as your man in A-Stan? I guess the Afghan people can vote them in later.

Hmm... I seem to remember a picture of a soccer game, and one of the footballers had his head on the ground, hisfeet straight up in the air, and the caption "You're Doing it Wrong"

On topic, I actually think that'd fit quite nicely right here...

When it comes to the election of a new president of Afghanistan, it's a very tricky and troubling issue. At the moment really there is no suitable candidate, someone that would satisfy the International community which is the power-broker and Afghans themselves.
Dr. Abdullah Abdullah would be a good choice because he is Kandahari Pashtun and he was in top leadership of the Northern Alliance, he spent the 80s in Panjshir, and in the 90s up until the 2001 he was the top confidant of the legendary commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.
He is supported by the Kandaharis and by the top members of the Northern Alliance, people like the Marshal Mohhamed Fahim who at the moment is most powerful man in Kabul and one of the most powerful men in Afghanistan.

you cant let them vote and give them democracy. it would further destabilize the region.
the warlords would vote by force and the candidate with the least amount of lead in his body would be elected.

there can only be a fake democracy (dictatorship with western values) in astan for at least the next decade(s)

*points at Gaza issue* that's what happens when you leave a government alone.

Its never going to be a Panjshiri -Northern Alliance figure, it has to be a Pashtun. Apart from the fact that the circles around Abdullah are highly corrupt. Getting access to Karzai means getting passed Qanooni, that's is going to cost you serious money. Karzai is powerless and caught between the Afghan tribal feuds - he cannot even control his own family let alone others- and squeezed by the Americans. Every new president will suffer a similar fate. Political parties should be allowed.

    I voted Dr. Abdullah

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I only read the first three options, because I thought the last would be a joke, well, a non-serious one at that, I want to change my vote now
