How the hell do you trade retinue?

Can't find the answer anywhere, and I've tried everything in game.
I want to get this stupid pagan magician off my faction leader onto some worthless family member.

Put another general into the same army/city/castle/etc. where your faction leader is, then click and drop the pagan magician onto the new target.

Be aware that not all retinues can be transfered, there is more that can't compared to those that can. Not sure but some mods out there have made more of them transferable

Also if the general you want to give the retinue to already has 8 of them you can't do it. You'll have to bring in a 3rd member.

I haven't actually been able to transfer any of a general's retinue to another general/family member. I have tried with several different ancillaries but none of them seem to work.

Does anyone know the mod that opens up these retinues for trade and maybe adds more traits and ancillaries to characters?

You can, but only certain ones.
