DDS plugin for GIMP

"Well i don't use GIMP but you have to convert from .texture to .dds right so why not convert them into .tga straight edit and then reconvert them back with DXTBmp."
It exactly that I did, but that don't work for the normalmaps, Normalmaps need only the DDS format, I think.

I make normal maps with .tga types only i find that more easy using a small template in CS5.

That work fine!! Save for some metalic parts... It possible to change a normal map with parts from existants normal Maps? Like copy/paste?

Hi, I have installed the 2.6 gimp and downloade the .dds plugin from above but it's not working. I copied all the files from the folder intot he plugin one can anyone help me

I have truobles with "my" GIMP. I have GIMP 2.6.11 and added dds plugin to right directory. but I can not open dds files (the first picture in attachments).

I have the newest version of Windows. I also changed the language of "my" GIMP to english, still problem is here. I´ve installed dds plugin downloaded from this page, also from RTW/BI page and also from official GIMP site. no ones works to me. where can be problem?

EDIT: when I try to run dds.exe directly in folder it shows me this message (the second picture in attachments).

Try if you can open the attached file. If yes, then there is a problem with your file.

I opened it with my GIMP without problems.

You cannot open dds.exe on its won - that's why you got the other error message. Just to check everything: your dds.exe is in this directory?: ...\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins

ok, I uninstall GIMP, reinstall my comp, instal GIMP add your dds to correct directory. but still problem is here - I can not open "danish_dragon_boat".

btw, I still have this message before I got message about "...dds plugin can not open ds file..."

could be problem with graphic card? time ago I used Photoshop with NVIDIA dds plugin and everything works fine...

That little window 'load dds' actually means that GIMP is opening the dragon_boat file. It is just asking whether you want to open all 'levels (mip maps)' - untick that option, it is very unlikely that you will do that. Then click OK and your picture will (should) open.

I haven't tried GIMP 2.6.11 - my version is 2.6.3., could that be the reason? I am going to check if there is a newer version of the DDS.exe available.

x64 gimp

this plugin is compiled in x32.
it will not work with x64 gimp.
this is the error you get when trying to run the 32 bit plugin with 64 bit gimp. you could install the 32 bit version of gimp if you really need this plugin.

Found out the solution myself. I have my own PC set up divided into one administrator account and one guest account for Internet security reasons. The former is password-protected, so when I work in the latter, which I normally do, any potential hacker out there who succeeds in breaking through my firewall must also break my password to get to my system files etc. Now, for this DDS plugin failure, I had a reason to work inside the administrator account, and the aforementioned problem persists there. But I discovered, to my surprise, that it works differently inside the guest account. Don't know why, but in this environment I have no trouble opening up all DDS files in GIMP(!). So I just need to transfer this kind of work to my guest account. I'm happy again.

hm, I used also the dds from official GIMP site, so I think it should be the newest version...

I am going to check if there is a newer version of the DDS.exe available.

I have tried this with the latest version on x64 bit and it worked for me flawlessly however i installed it for some other user as he was having problems in installation but i failed to make it work on his system so dunno what was wrong on his system.

Gigantus, now I downloaded GIMP 2.6.3, added yours plugin and still have the same problem - can not open dds file...
