Does oil work for muslim factions?

Hi all, just a quick question. After never playing a muslim faction I decided to give it a try and am having a lot of fun as Khwarz or however you spell it lol. I just had some Cumans set up, they had all their cavalry trying to push thru my gates and NO oil came out. I had the flags flying etc...and had them right where I wanted but no oil. Is it a middle east thing or did I install wrong? I had just reinstalled SS after a long time of not playing and it shows version 1.04. Thanks all!!

I play Egypt and my oil seems to be working fine. I can't really see exact damage done cause AI is pushing all their troops through the gate at once, but I'm pretty sure it's working since percentage damage adds up fast after oil is spilled at them.

Maybe you had one of your units too close under it and they didn't want to hurt it?

I think it may just be a bug that happens sometimes in siege battles. I've had it happen to me, but not in every siege battle in a campaign. Have you tested it to see if it happens every time? I've also been in sieges where the towers don't fire arrows even though the flag is up above it.

Yeah, for sure not that, once I lost my faction heir to my own oil when he pursued some routing units at the exact wrong time and ran right under a nice pot full LOL. Well it has happened twice now, just had it happen again, so not sure why dang it! I love funneling the cavalry heavy factions thru the front gate with a few lines of spears waiting and letting the traffic jam get doused, this is crimpin my whole strategy!

you need to have some sort of on foot unit on top of your walls/gate house for oil to work. i would oftern keep calv next to my towers to produce arrows and then bring them back behind a second wall once the first has been breached, the only bad thing is no oil comes out unless someone is on the wall itself.

What I would advise is this:
Try playing with a different faction, especially a Catholic one. I found the last time that I had serious trouble with SS that the problems were less with muslim factions. Perhaps it will work the other way around as well.

Secondly, if you want to prevent Heir Death by Oil: Sent him out another gate. Those units are routing, you can catch them anyway. The other gate won't spill boiling oil.

Well just to add insult to injury, apparently it works for the AI but not for me! I just sieged a castle, got oil dumped on me, then when I took it and they sieged back 2 turns later, no oil again. Pretty frustrating!!

what sort of wall do you have?
I was surprised that I had no oil only to realize i had wooden walls

LOL, no, not that! In fact the AI poured oil on me when I took the castle; its just when I took it that it quit working for me once they came back two turns later! I had units in the right spots, just no oil coming out for me...

I cant figure out why it worked for AI but not for me; I would understand if it didn't work at all, but like this is odd?

did you have troops manning the gate? It won't work unless you do and can see the flags above the towers.

Hey tallstark, I'm new to this mod but I noticed that the previous installations should be removed. Since you're reinstalling could it be that you had an older version installed?

well then ther ar 3 possibillities
a) not properly manned
b) gatehouse damaged destroyed so far that no oil comes out
c) BUG

Not that, I have been playing a pretty long time and it has worked fine in the past. Gate is not damaged, I have units to either side of gatehouse and on top of the gatehouse, flags were flying and arrows from towers, just no oil when I am defending. The odd thing is the oil works for AI so the oil is functioning...

was a flag between the gate towers?

if yes then the only thing I can think of is BUG

Hmm, thats a good question! I don't remember seeing one between the towers now that you mention it. What would cause that to happen? I have units between all towers so I can get the arrow support, is there any reason one type of unit would not activate oil? I have 10 crossbow at the main gatehouse...

I'm not 100% sure about this but I believe only melee infantry units can activate the middle flag
what i'm sure about is that the middle flag indicates wether oil is manned or not

I have another theory: The enemy had a spy in your settlement. Maybe that messes up the oil?

Wouldn't you want an Assassin to sabotage stuff?

I'm talking about opening the gates with a spy - maybe that disables oil?
