    Default Spy detection?

Who or what is responsible for the detection of spies in settlements? From time to time I get a message, that a spy has been detected and either fled or was hanged, what triggers this and how can I detect enemy spies better in my settlements?

    Thanx,

You have a certain chance of detecting any spy in your settlement, but that chance is small. You increase it by recruiting spies. And probably by including buildings that recruit spies or improve them (last thing I'm not sure about)

as far as i know you yourself cant do anything to get rid of them. maybe seekin out enemy spies with your own and then hunting them down with assassins, but i have no idea if that would be worth the time and trouble itd cost you

Use your own spys , They can detect all other spys and assasins on the map

Have to chip in on this as well; I'm having a problem with the Hungarians as the Romans; they keep sending spies into my settlements to open the gates. Please tell me there's a simpler way of getting rid of them then having to train assassins/spies.

nothing can be more simple: train spy>end turn>agent detected: hungary
alternativley you can build +law buildings to improve your chances of detecting spies

Oooh, I didn't know about law buildings, thanks!
What I meant was, I'd rather not waste time training an assassin/spy combo to track them down if there's a way of decreasing their effectiveness such as through buildings.

Generals with good personal security also make it very difficult to get in or stay in cities. Faction leaders or heirs are often the best as they get default traits for this.

You know an enemy spy is there yourself when you have an abnormally low public order.

You don't really need an assassin, concentrate on building high level spies and generals with good personal security in the settlement and you should have a fairly good chance of detecting and killing enemy spies.

Generals also get a trait if they catch spies. Three levels to this trait, which increases security along with something else off the top of my head. :-)

The best way I've found to detect them is with your own spies. In an old English campaign I was fighting, I had really bad public order in Bruges. Sent in a spy and he routed out 3 danish spies. Suddenly I had no public order problems

Wait...that's another thing I've been wondering about: I've read somewhere spies create disorder...anyone have a linky poo for this?

You can test it easily enough in game with a couple of spies. Move one into a city and check the public order level and then move another in and check it again

basically to know if you have spies in cities just look at the city details
if you have more than 20% unrest (unrest not religious unrest) than you probably have a spy

Hmmm, I wonder, do your own spies decrease unrest? (yes, I'm thinking of Shinobi from Shogun )

yeah if you have more then 20% unrest the flames with forks you probably have a spy
same thing is when you spy on them it causes unrest and might revolt if it gets too low.

also putting spy in you own decreases unrest i believe but not really sure

    Just to clarify -

    - Law bonuses have nothing to do with detecting spies
    - Spys do not decrease unrest
