When you colonise, do you just take the territory or work on it to take it a city?
Brazil, definitely my favourite, the amount of money it makes you is huge, South Africa and South America in general aren't bad though![]()
I usually go for the carribean first, then mexico and then I conquer the incas. After that eventually you can go to India and from there to Japan and China which are very lucrative.
That's a good way to end up owing a lot of loans if you're not careful (and risking bankruptcey). When you have unfinished colonies you pay a yearly colony upkeep (like 1.7 per colony? Something like that. Might have some modifying factors). If you have a lot of colonies this can really hurt your income. So, while it seems pricey, if you keep the number of colonies you make a little lower, and work to make them become cities faster, you can save a lot of your monthly income from being sucked away.
I'd imagine it's ok to take territories and wait if you have a lot of trade income, but just production and tax I think may be leaving your coffers a little bare.

Depends, are you playing with or without expansions? If ou're playing with, just take any place you can get and turn it into a city before you expand. If you're playing without, rush Brazil because there's 3 gold mines there.

I usually go for the Carribean, Brazil, and South Africa ( to reach the Indian Ocean ) to start me off. Not necessarily in that order though. Rather depends on game circumstance and what nation I'm playing as. However if your Castille or Portugal for that matter, it is very easy to get a jump on everyone in colonizing. As either one you could have a bunch of self-sustained cities before anyone else even picks QFTNW as a NI. Trick is to not colonize more than your economy can handle. That is, if your playing IN or EU3:Complete. Since you went broke colonizing; I presume you are.
I always try to get yucanton and Mexico as well try to get the coast lines first, if you get the coast lines then no one else can colonize thats how I got all of south america one game as Spain![]()

Analysis should not be diverted by reflections upon the zeal with which the victors at the end of the Second World War punished the defeated for war crimes. The victors were animated by the ideals of the Atlantic Charter and of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was about to peep over the eastern horizon. But first, they wanted a little hanging.

I can't remember which faction it is, they control Africa south of Gibraltar and they have a gold mine, in my Portugal campaign that single province was bringing me an extra +40gold a year I think
Don't bother yourself with colonies. Just invade India. You will get a lot more money in the long term.
Colonies are expensive. Which is why I suggested just stealing them from other nations. You can convert the culture now with a colonist, as long as it is below 5000 population (I think?)
I like to play as Norway and Conquer Greenland and North AmericaWith whole world mod I ended up conquering all of north and south America as well as Southeast Asia.
