Is there any drawbacks to doing such a thing and I have to do this because they apparently molested Sicily and Genoa and I want Italy.

Nothing whatsoever short of being at war with the Papacy
I was worried the Pope would call a Crusade on me, but no, nothing. Be warned, your faction standing will take a huge hit with Catholic factions, but other than that, no serious effects.
Oh, and watch out for Papal Guard; 1 on 1 they can trump most Roman units, and they never, ever rout.
Papal States molested both Sicily and Genoa meaning that they were destroyed utterly. I'm not sure though Poland seems pissed at me at the moment and I can't afford war with them and I'm allied with the HRE. Should I still do it?
You should only worry about Poland if you've occupied Hungary, otherwise the only thing they can really do is attack your ships/docks and perhaps Bucharest, if you have it.
Fat chance, Italy is Catholic through and through, Rome's wonder buildings ensure the Catholic faith isn't going to fall unless the city is taken.
Fought four wars in four different games with the Papacy, never seen them declare a Crusade against me. I'm not even sure they can declare Crusades against Orthodox factions.
If you attack his holyness, he will declare a Crusade against Byzantium, you will have alot of Catholic factions, looking for a fight! I predict you will die in very large numbers. I would find an easier target, an excommunicated catholic faction, probably Venice, they always seem to excel at getting excommunicated. How abit of Turk bashing, the Byzantines would always be up for that

Your relations with Catholic nations will decrease, but the Pope simply cannot put a Crusade on you. Orthodox factions are compeltely immune to Crusades (but ofcourse, can be targets of Jihads).
Give a man a fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of the day.
Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
What has been said already, you will simply see your relations with Catholic factions go down the drain but nothing else.
I wonder has anyone managed to enable crusades beeing called against Orthodox targets?
Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they are in good company.
Huh, nice (or not) to see that suspicion confirmed.
I don't remember being crusaded upon or being able to crusade on an Orthodox faction. But there's this Urban Legend that Pope can call a crusade upon Constantinople if you're messing with him too much.
I moved the old guy from Rome to Diyarbakir, Russia, Norway and other funny places a bunch of times... and never got a crusade.
You could test it in hotseat. Be Orthodox as one faction and mess with the Pope and be Catholic as another faction and check if Orthodox cities appear on the crusade target lists for you.
Constantinople is a crusade target in descr_strat, but I have a feeling that's if it's Muslim-held only.
thats they key to playing a good game. choose weak, ineffective nations as allies and make them the most powerful in the region (do this with like 4 or 5 nations) and use them for proxy-wars. and if they ever invade you, take away their allowance
haha. Like taking candy from a baby~
