Actually it is correct. When you select 'all' in a custom battle it ignores the 'era' lines.

But thats just it, I never touched anything else, never modded anything at all. This was the first file I touched and absolutely nothing.

Ishan sent me a private message to launch "IO command in the .cfg file?" what in the world is that? And where can I find it?

Post 60 is what you have to do and the preference file is in the main Medieval 2 folder where the dll's are.

    Setting up io.file_first
with a text editor add the following to the top of medieval2.preference, this file might be set as read only so remove this attribute make your changes and make sure you reenable it or the game will set it back to its default setting.

    [io]
    file_first = true

The easy way to check it's working is to give the ownership of a mercenary unit (Mercenary Frankish Knights as an example) to a specific faction and try a custom battle, it should be available at the bottom of the unit roster.

Yeah, I believe Gigantus is right.
Went to preference and cant find it anywhere. All's I see is

    advice, keys.dat, and player.

UPDATE found it but doesnt works still.

Learned something again, thought "All" simply meant to choose all available era entries for that faction and display it (which is kinda "ignoring it" in the first place). Thanks.

If the mod even fails to start then u have done something wrong either in the EDU or BMDB file.
Revert all the changes and start from scratch and mod one unit first to grasp the method properly.

I just realized after unpacking everything that I didnt delete the geographical things that make the game crash. Did that ASAP and now it runs again. HOWEVER just to check something I deleted the entire export_descr_units list and saved and guess what, the game runs as if nothing is wrong. In other words this file is not affecting the game and as far as my computer is concerned doesnt exist.

Ummm....does it matter that I am using windows Vista?

The files are unpacked from .pack files now if u delete sau EDU file then the game will use the file inside the .pack file..
So i'm saying is that the games using IO command seeks unpacked files first then goes for the .pack files if anything is missing.

It has nothing to do with ur OS.

Read the readme for the unpacker, it tells you how to run the game with modified files.

Do have a back up of the EDU file that u messed up or not?
If not reinstall and unpack again coz i don't think u'll get the specific file unpack part.
Then we will start from scratch.

    ______________________________________________________________________

    V. USING MODIFIED FILES
    ______________________________________________________________________

    - To use the modified files create a batch file in your
    Medieval II: Total War folder

    - In the batch file add the following line

    medieval2.exe --io.file_first

    - NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
    launched:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
    data\descr_geography_new.db

    - Save the batch file and then launch Medieval II: Total War using the
    newly created batch file.
Are you having problems understanding what that means?

Or have you done it already and it's not working?

And there's no way to change that?

Also if the minimum's four is that on normal unit size or another setting?
