    Default Crash problem

I have a problem when running Stainless Steel under Vista (note: This problem has no occured running the normal game, Broken Cresend or Kingdoms). When I play in siege battles, sooner or later the game will crash to desktop and show a 'Unspecified Error'.

This does not happen in the campaign or during any other battle (non-siege). It occurs on many different times during a siege battle, but never when it is the first battle since a compleet computer reboot.

I have tried to find the system.log file to give you information , but it seems to have hidden for me. I have already tried to solve the problem by re-installing the entire game, including SS6.1. I am not running any submods and do not have the supply system installed.

Anyone any clue what could be wrong?

I don't use Vista so I can't help you there. Make sure you unpacked SS6.0 both part 1 and part 2 before 6.1. A lot of people miss part 2.

I made very sure of that. I have both part 1 and part 2 installed.

Apparently Vista stores the log file as a compatibility file somewhere else.

    Vista seems unpredictable?

I installed SS 6.1 just to test it out on my new rig with Vista Home premium

found the system log for SS sitting in the main m2tw/logs folder.

    the SS .cfg file has:
    [log]
    to = logs/system.log.txt

(I've not changed the default settings in SS 6.1 or added any sub-mods)

When re-installing the game using Vista you have to make sure you delete the M2TW folder from the app-data folder which is hidden. You have to make it viewable through the control panel.

It's also a good idea to use CCcleaner (or something similar) and disk defrag before re-installing. Also, when re-installing make sure you have full control of the M2TW folder.

Finally, when installing SS change the properties of the SEGA folder to remove read only to all subfolders and files. You should do this when installing both parts of the mod and again when you install the patch.

It's a huge headache but after re-installing the game several times this is the only way I've gotten it to re-install correctly.

I know this path. Okey. I can do this.

I don't know what a CCcleaner is? En defragmentation often removes most files on the disc, right?

I don't know how to remove 'read only' from many files. Can I do this under properties?

Thank you for your help thus far. I will certainly try. But I would like answer to these questions before I do it. I hope that is not too much to ask.

Not at all. I was asking these same questions last week.

CCcleaner is a free program that cleans temporary files from your computer. Just google CCcleaner and download the program. It's a good idea to run the program before doing any changes to your computer.

Defrag won't delete anything you need from your computer. It just cleans up your hard drive and frees up space. It's a good idea to do this on a regular schedule as you would a virus scan.

To change "read only" find the SEGA file, right click and click properties. At the bottom you will see two boxes...read only and hidden. Uncheck read only and click "apply". Then click "apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files". This will prevent any read only errors when installing the mod. Make sure you do it before installing part 1 and then again before installing part 2.

You may also want to disable the UAC. I've heard it can cause problems also. To disable the UAC, go to control panel and type UAC in the search field. Even if it doesn't effect installation it's nice not having to click "allow" every time you want to do anything in vista.
