Well Sicily is awesome, they tend to be quite cav heavy though.

Haven't tried Flanders. But for field you want to go for Italian City factions, only problem with these is you spend so long fighting over the Corsican islands thay you dont get a chance to invade anyone

    1. You should pick a region that you are geographically familiar to, speaking real life.
    2. The question is, do you want it to be difficult? Or have great army(units) who easily crush everything in it's path?

Lets say you come from around the north sea: UK/skandinavia. Then you pick either:
    • Scotland, Irland, Flanders, Norway. [Hard/Slow] Norway got solid offencive Inf. and good early archers.

    • France, , Denmark, England. [Easy] England got alot of armour pirc. Archers. Solid billmen inf.
Western factions got settlements tighter together and you got the Americas to test out your command skills.

Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

Ireland is fun, the Scots also. If not, you could try Armenia which is really hard cause of the crapy units they can muster.
Gorgia is really fun! or lituania. the grim look those hardy soldier have is wicked! i just love them

Denmark is one of my favorites but norway is good too, norway has a very good 2h sword unit and some good spearmen but then for denmark norse axe are plenty stronger than sami axe and they get obudshear, my favorite halberd unit.

HRE is a very very nice faction but it lacks the decent bows you desire, the fun of using reiters and gothics might make up for that.

Byz have everything you're asking for, varangians are very dangerous inf, heavy spearmen are unusual and overpowered at the moment.... work in progress. Their bows are very good, great horse archers, great cataphracts, etc. etc. Byz have it.

france is great for all around, but you have to wait till late game. England is nice too, good archers, good enough horsemen, plenty of billmen.

I'll throw you a curveball here. Interested in great infantry and a hard as hell faction to play? Be the Pope. Papal States baby. When you get the offer of Templar Chapter House, click Accept and you're off and running. Papal Guards available from the start, Italian Militia units, then Templar units, viola! Add in no family tree, no babies, no room for expansion, and no real control over yourself (as the Pope) and you have a formula that's guaranteed to make you pull your hair out, but still have the satisfaction of fielding armies that can really kick some ass.

Recommendation (optional): Have Tylenol and throat lozenges near your computer.

    kiev.

constant struggle at all fronts and good economy.
ALL types of enemy units in front of yours. every unit in the game will face you.
beautiful own units. excellent unit variety production, featuring horse archers, light cavs, very heavy horses, heavy long range archers, heavy axemen, heavy spears, swordsmen... only lacking in pikemen (not anymore due to mercs).

    strong starting position.

surrounded by green steppes for miles

    cons:

no pope. but you still get crusaded and mongolŽed.. you can even manage to get jihaeŽded
