Quick Survey of the RTW MP community

The question is this,

With Empire so close on the horizon and as you begin to replace your older systems who of you are planning to graduate from RTW and step up to Kingdoms? I'm not here to troll on you all, but I must serious beg the question why stay with RTW? Is it financial? because it certainly can't be simply that Kingdoms is not your 'era' taking into consideration of mods....the mods we have now and what may soon come to be. To be perfectly honest I think I've answered the question, it's the same reason some people still play Diablo on battlenet. Yes they love it, but it's all they know and can afford.

So am I wrong? and if so why? and will you or won't you move on with the rest of us? I would certainly love to see a new base of good player join the MIIK MP community which is desperately lacking on TWC.

Well, for me, I'm a little in the middle. I like all TW games, but my parents don't allow me to play them much. After I got Eras, I wasn't allowed to get another game for a year, so I stuck with RTW, which is the best in that lot, and also my favourite period, and have therefore gotten used to RTW MP, and happy with it. Recently I got Kingdoms, but I'm still trying to get it to work properly, but once it does, I might be moving onto Kingdoms MP, but I don't think RTW MP will ever be totally relinquished for me.

While I don't own Kingdoms, may I suggest throwing a tournament for M2 or Kingdoms?

That's a huge difference between the Rome and Med. forums; here there's KotH, and the possibility of Njord's ESL ladder- and that's presently. In the past, countless TWC people (and other forums as well) have thrown tournaments and this serves to attract new people and keep them interested. I don't think I've ever seen a tournament in M2's twc area (admittedly, I don't go there often) and have only once stumbled upon a Kingdoms tournament (twr's).

Maybe that will work, maybe it won't. Some games people just don't want to play- ever try getting an Alexander or Barbarian Invasion game going? Matches are the only way of getting a game, and even then its usually the same core of people.

For what it's worth, it's an idea that might pay off. (Also, I'd absolutely jump in on a vanilla M2 tournament)

I will likely upgrade my system or buy a new one. But I will still play RTW online, since a lot of my buddies here play it.

I only have 1Gb per month to spend, so I'm on a bit of a tight download budget.
Btw, I haven't ever tried online playing, but I always assumed it spent lots of Mbs. So does anyone know how much Mbs would an online battle of RTW spend?

I used to play RTW MP when my connection speed was only 1.5 Mbps down & 125 Kbps up, but not sure how much I used a month.

My comp is ready for ETW so it's not a performace issue, I just think M2TW is a bit sluggish compared to RTW. Units don't seem to respond to commands as well, have more trouble keeping formation, etc. Plus I think the units/factions are just more interesting in RTW. There are also more people playing so I never have trouble finding a game. But then again I've never tried M2TW MP I'm just speaking from my SP experience. Maybe I'll give it a shot some time, but I currently have SS installed so it's not compatible.

Kingdoms is a great expansion. I think the main problem is that you have to log on each mod and that splits the M2TW lobby... even more than with RTW and BI. So the only way to catch proper Kingdoms games is to contact your buddies via x-fire, make appointments or organise a tourney (like TWR does at the moment). I really hope CA will learn from the experience and makes the following expansions for ETW playable without changing the mod or the lobby.

Most certainly RTW players will get straight to ETW as soon as it comes out. I cant see ppl upgrading their system for Kingdoms tbh. Maybe there will be a little side effect. A bigger effect is actually coming up as M2TW and Gold version are sold on the cheap price shelves and that will bring several new players to M2TW MP.

I didn’t even know Kingdoms existed until I saw the PoM U-tube video. I bought it and would love to play it but the interest just isn’t there. I only have 3 people on my x-fire guild and no one else seems interested.

Selifator and myself can usually only get together on weekend because of the time zone differential. Some times we can’t play because of high ping rate like yesterday.

An excellent point was made, part of the problem is if you’re playing Crusades you have to get out and get back in if you want to play Teutonic for example.

As far as units go however it is by far one of the best expansions out there for the TW series. As much as other’s like the Rome Vanilla I’m letting you know now that you’re missing out on a whole new experience in Kingdoms.

As an example the artillery has to be used, it’s too cool not to use. Barrels of oil thrown from catapults and then they explode over the enemies head in air burst. The graphics are truly phenomenal.

Then there are the Greek fire throwers. Has to be seen to be appreciated.

As in the first one was the most entertaining, the second entertaining, but not as much as the first and the third was even less entertaining then the second, and so on and so forth. This applies to most sequels in movies and games in my opinion.

I'm not too impressed with the naval battles. They look nice yes, but not that great that it is enough of a reason to buy it. I'm upgrading my pc for other games, Neverwinter Nights 2, Dragon Age: Origins.

Ι like Rome Total War so much that I shall continue playing!!!
It's a classic! It has nothing to do with money! Check out the craze with the new MegaMan 9 on the Wii. It's an 8-bit game, but it sells faster than any other! People love classics!

I'll buy ETW but even if it's one of the best games i brought i still don't think i'll leave rtw completely been playing this gaame too long and as long as gamespy still supports it i'll play it.
