I wonder that can we have "Step back" or "Step forward" button for Melees?
from the Shogun areas, there was a "step forward" button when soldiers melees, it means they try to push enemies forward to break their formation.
It changed from Medieval 1 to until now. Instead, we have "hold position" button that allows soldiers to keep their position and do not run forward when they enemy withdraws, but it quite too simple.
In Medieval 1 and Rome, we can push enemies forward only when we have better charge point or we are winning.
In my opinions, in battle we should have "step back" and "step forward" button for some reasons.
One reason is the battle of Cannae as described in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cannae. I wonder how could we do like that in Total wars series because to make a semi circle like Hannibal did may take about 15 minutes or after loosing half of your fighters. So maybe if we have "step back" button, we may order our soldiers to gradually withdraw (instead of running away or fleeing) and if enemies do not "hold position" they will be in a trap....
the "step forward" can be used for the same purpose. We can break the enemies line at one point in order to put more elite allied soldiers their and cut the enemies' information (in Shogun total war we can do it by Using nodachi-samurai or warrior monk) to do this. We use our soldiers to push and create a hole in enemies' line, then we can charge into it or use cavalry to run through that gap to make a flank. Note that we do not flee an enemy band and then run into that gap, "step forward button" allow us to create a hole in enemy band's line and run into when the band is still fighting.
By doing this, we can use our best melees soldiers (which could push more) to cut the enemies' line instead of using them for flanking only. For EB, if we use the best melee soldiers to charge from the front line instead from the flank, we can have some winning however we will loose more money (we loose less soldiers than the enemies, however they are too costly so the enemy may loose less money) but we still can not break that line. Most of the time what we can do is to kill and make enemy line thinner and thinner so we can make them run and use it as a hole to do flanking.
"step forward" may be useless for phanlanx because they do not have momentum (they walk) or space to take that momentum to throw themselves into the enemies' line. They can only push gradually as fast as the speed of walking (as seen in Alexander the movie, they can not run in front of enemies' line to not to break the formation)
In battle, we can do "step forward" by increase our charge point (although it does not help in melees but it can be used to push as I know), attack point and reduce defense point.
We can do "step back" by decrease our charge point, attack point and reduce defense point or not.
As I know, when we click on hold position, it increase the defense point while reducing the same attack point.
Maybe we will loose some morale while doing "step back", so only high ranked General can allow this order.
"step forward" might create some lost for our lives, but we could gain much more space for better maneuver (we may want to make the space worthy for pushing up). I think in real battle, although every body wants to push enemy back, but "step forward" means to push them back "as hard as we can" or "by all costs", so we sacrifice lives for more space advantages. However, I did not see many evidences for this tactics when reading history, there are some evidences for "step back" method.
Please note that all of these button made only for faster changing of position of bands in battlefield. It should be must faster, or the time frame of battle and defense point must be raised so that when the Cohort push the Spanish backward (like in Cannae battle above), the Spanish do not loose half of their numbers and flee before Hannibal can use his horses and elite melees to break through The Italian formation from both flanks.
So thank you if you have some responses
