Wat to do when pope is your nationality?

Im playing as England on easy/easy. Its turn 44, taken all of scotland, ireland, wales and just starting in France, Have taken Rennes and am massing outside Angers after just destroying 3 french armies in one battle .

The new pope is english. Is there anything that you recommend I do to take advantage of this or is it not a big deal? I'm pretty good on the battle tactics and economy stuff but the diplomacy/pope side of things is something that I'm pretty clueless about at the moment. I'm allies with Papal States (was before the pope was elected) and have perfect relationship with them and am only enemies with France. Anything I could do to get the Pope to hurt France?

There is not much advantage as you can't control him the only thing it gives you is an Excellent Relashionship with now the Papal State and full crosses(How much to Pope likes you)

In my experience it only affects your initial relationship with the new Pope. If you're a bad, bad boy they behave the same as any other Pontif.

He will turn a blind eye to your antics sometimes (especially with the "warlike/agressive" type traits), but not all that much.

You can request that he declare a crusade on a French settlement, but you don't need the Pope to have come from your Empire to do that.

edit: That is, you can request the crusade IF France is on the Pope's bad side.

It has more to do with the Pope-o-meter than what faction the guy in white came from. The key is that you get a great Pope-o-meter rating if you voted for the guy (if he is from your faction, I assume you did). So watch the meter and let that be your guide each step you take.

usually when my fraction gets the pope i attack any one i wont when they counter attack the pope gives them bad relations ya see me and my pope are tight =]

Having the Pope come from your nation helps your initial relations, but remember that in those days, everyone's loyalty to God would always come first. If you misbehave, he'll punish you.

Once a Milanese priest became Pope... then Milan STILL attacked Rome and got excommunicated.

Technically it is the Pope Overview screen and it is the Papal Standing -- I simply and affectionately refer to it as the Pope-o-meter. Just wanted you to know that I can call it correctly in case you were wondering.

You can only "fail" without excommunication if your standing is high and relatively higher than the other faction. I am not a betting man on other situations and the fact that your cardinal is pope is not a direct factor.

as stated, it only benefits you from the start but afterwards is up to you to keep steady relations seeing how there is no difference after the pope has been selected.

What the above posters said applies basically. Your own faction's Pope will have a perfect relation with you at first, and might also share your dislikes. I am not sure about the latter, but I believe the Pope does dislike the factions you might have been at war with, or have generally bad relations.

Just bribe/be nice to the pope and he will leave you alone regarding France. if France has a cardinal in the college it would hurt them if you killed him. The Pope cares little for factions that aren't in the college, seeing them as unbelievers and heathens who have strayed from the true faith.

controlling the pope is fairly easy, especially if you have a good starting relationship (as in when you do if the pope is your nationality) basically all it takes is bribing him or donation some florines each turn, and continually upgrading your churches(once you reach cathedral you'll be his favorite faction, especially if you get the 1st huge cathedral) so as long as you keep "contributing" to the church you should have no worries about making him mad

Frankly, I've found no benefit at all.

If I vote for another factions Cardinal, and he becomes Pope, my relations go to Perfect or near perfect, if I vote for my own Cardinal my relations with Pope go to perfect. So, why lose a Cardinal? If at all possible, I vote another faction's Cardinal Pope.

The only exception I've found is if I'm planning on being at war with that faction soon, tends to piss off the Pope a bit extra it seems (but I'm not 100% on this).

So, really, why would I vote for my own Cardinal to be Pope, when I get the same benefit for voting someone elses? So long as the guy you voted for wins, you win.
