Default Having problems running Stainless Steel under Vista? Click here

Due to the number of problems that seem to arise running SS under Vista, I'll post this link to the Vista troubleshooting thread on the forums. Thanks to Sonny HiFi for the link.

Some excerpts from the above link that should prove useful. Thanks to Rozanov for this FAQ

Go to My Computer/Program Files, and Right-Click on the Sega Folder and select Properties, at the bottom there will be a check box that looks similar to the following:

    Attributes:

    [X] Read-only
    [ ] Hidden

Uncheck the Read-only box and hit apply, and then select apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files. Then the annoying vista ADMIN will pop and select 'allow' and it will take about 1-2 minutes to apply it to all the folders/files. This should prevent any conflicting read-only install errors, make sure you do it before installing 6.0/6.1, and then again before you install 6.2.

LTC does work with Vista. However, there are few things you have to do to get it to work.

1.) Right-click on your SEGA folder, and click on "properties". In the this window, click on the "security" tab. You will see an "edit" button with the windows shield on it. Click on that and allow the administrator and other users listed there to alter files by ticking the first box that you see in the panel below the users. Press "apply" and "OK".

2.) Now, go into your MTW2 main folder and edit the "landstoconquer.cfg" file.

first go to your folder option and make sure that you change settings so you'll be able to see all hidden folders and files.
now go to 'users' folder, next double click on 'user' folder (the one that contains all documents, downloads etc). you'll see new hidden folder called 'AppData'. go there. there should be 3 subfolders. go to 'Local'. next folder that we're looking for is 'VirtualStore'. next again you'll see 3 folders. this time click on 'Program Files'. and depends where did you install your game you should be able to find folder. inside medieval2 folder there's another cfg file that you had to change. also this folder contains your save game and few other data. in my occasion i install medieval in games folder so my path is looking like this C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\ Games\Medieval2 Total War

    re unpacked files:
If you're running vista, and you don't specify path for unpacker, usually all files are stored in mymodfolder together with all hidden files. The path should look like C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\...\Medieval2 Total War, of course after you uncheck the hidden box. Inside mymodfolder just go to data folder and you should be able to find the files

I was looking for instructions on where to find screenshots (using Vista) the other day, and could not find definitive ones on this board. This thread seems the appropriate place to post what I found.

For any members having the same issue as me, they can be found at:

    C>Users>[username]>Appdata>Local>VirtualStore>Program Files>Sega>M2TW>Tgas

Make sure you can see hidden files & folders.

Follow this to turn off the UAC http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/ , go through and unhide everything, again. Report back on your results.
Another tip for Vista/Windows 7 users from Polariszephyr:

First off, don't install M2TW in the default Program Files(x86) directory, since access to that is always restricted; put it in a directory under your username (eg. I have it in C:\Users\Username\Games\SEGA\Medieval II- Total War)- all subdirectories under your user directory don't have access restrictions. This alone should be enough to remove any problems.

If it still doesn't seem to be working, then you simply have to give admin rights to your extractor program (7-zip, winRAR, etc.) when you extract the mod files; this should prevent any problems. I suppose it's possible that you might still have issues if your OS security settings are setup in certain ways, but for most people that should fix the problem.
