The Guelphs and Ghibellines were factions supporting, respectively, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor in central and northern Italy during the 12th and 13th centuries. The struggle for power between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire had arisen with the Investiture Conflict of the 11th century. I would like a mod simulating these conflicts.

If you need any information here is a wikipedia page. if you have any questions please ask me. I have only basic modding skills but I will do what I can if I can get someone to help me out.

guelf and ghibelline? that'll be pretty hard to mod...things got pretty messed up in northern italy, and since they were essentially political parties with a presence in most major cities, it'll be difficult to represent that on a M2TW map. good luck with this.

Yeah you are probably right about that..I think it would be possible because there were some cities that were almost exclusivly part of one or the other..

i think that better idea would be italian states , but very detailed one and northern part of italy

including ,genoa , tuscany (or florence) , pisa , holy roman empire (present in lombardy) , modena , venice , papal states (playable one) , siena , ferrara , mantoa

but imagine how much units would have to be created

Hmm...Interesting but my vision was Assassinations and Betrayals between the different factions. The emperor trying to take out the pope etc etc. And Florence is neccesary because it was were it all started

As for units..ya we can't just have everyone with Italian spear militia

I'm glad to see that you've started building a small team.

Out of curiosity, what is the scope of this mod? For example, in the 13th century we see Charles of Anjou crush the last of the Hohenstaufen as a Papal ally and take control of Sicily and Southern Italy, and constant harassment of northern Italy by both himself and his French allies. And on the other hand, you also have the Aragonese who invade Sicily and southern Italy after the Sicilian Vespers. Are you going to try to script these sorts of events in? Will other factions like the Angevins and Aragonese be included?

Well I am going to try to script these things.(or find someone else more experienced who can) We are currently debating the map.We may or may not have all of Italy. I think Anjou and Aragon could be Emergent factions. You seem to have alot of information about this, maybe you could help us out with research? I know alot but not everything

Hey, I got your PM. To be honest, I have very little familiarity with the Guelf/Ghibelline conflict beyond their involvement with the Angevins and Sicily during the late 13th century. Other than that, I know just about nothing...and even then, what I do know tends to be general historical events, I can't tell you what the armies were like, how they dressed, what weapons they used, etc., etc.

Still, if you just want some general history for a relatively narrow time period, I'd be more than happy to write up a little summary with some key events and figures...but anything more than that is beyond me.
Let me persuade you with my powerful logic skills.

In light of the Total War series, a quote from the theologian whom I respect the most:

The Heavenly City outshines Rome, beyond comparison. There, instead of victory, is truth; instead of high rank, holiness.
    St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo

If you could do that anything would be helpful
