    Default A question

Hello, I've been playing the Medieval 2 Total War campaign for some time and I've noticed an oddity in the gameplay. Whenever I am sieged and I engage the besiegers they never advance towards my town even though they have all the necessary equipment. Every time I am required to bring my soldiers out of the town and charge them.

Is this normal or is my game bugged?

    Oh and hi.

    Welcome to the forum!

If you are inside and choosing to sally out, why would they advance into the range of the towers? Or am I misunderstanding the question? Would you do so if the roles were reversed?

So you're saying that because I chose to engage the enemy army besieging my town, they will always fall back some distance before engaging my men. Well, that explains it. I just found it strange that never once did the enemy army ever try to breach my walls in such battles.

I disagree. If I am beseiging a settlement and the enemy sallies out, I fall back. This allows the enemy forces to spread out and become more vulnerable to cavalry. Also they will tire a bit more before engaging my front line. More time for archers is not a bad reason either.

since you're sallying (right?) it turns into a defensive battle for them. the purpose of the sally is to rid you of your attackers by turning them into the defenders. so even if you go out, attack, and fall back inside your town or castle they won't move because the AI still thinks it's fighting a defensive battle.

They actually make it easy for you by moving far back. Whenever I siege a settlement and they attempt to sally out to me I always move my archers into a spot where they can fire on the enemy as the come through the gate. This means they have already lost half their men before they can even get close to my lines. You should be happy the AI gives you a fair chance to get out of your gate and setup your attack formation!

They will only attack your walls if they want to attack you. If your the one doing the attacking, they are going to sit in a defensive position out of range of your towers and with freedom of movement
