    Wasn't it the opposite? The painting got lighter and they coated it with varnish to keep it darker.

    I think it had something to do with keeping the painting in good shape, but it resulted in the painting getting darker but I'm not sure...

    Think so too, they removed the varnish later making it lighter and closer to what it was originally.
