So I'm playing Venice, H/H, and I've finished off the Byzantines and set my self up in the Balkans/ Asia Minor, but I had lost Venice and Zagreb to Milan and the HRE, respectively, very early in the game and I've just now gotten around to counterattacking. Unfortunately, the current Pope is German, so rather than risk pissing him off by directly attacking Zagreb, which was garrisoned by a full stack and had another stack close enough to support, I decided to plant armies on the bridges north and east of the city to draw the Germans out.
So, I have about a half-stack out of Ragusa camped on the bridge nearest Zagreb, which they attack with a full stack. I've got a pretty balanced force of DFK, Armored Sergeants, Peasant Crossbows, Balkan Archers and Mailed Knights, and they bring up a Sergeant-heavy army with some catapults. The catapults kill about a dozen Mailed Knights in one shot early on, but from then on out they mostly manage to kill friendly Germans running across the bridge, leading to an easy mass rout and lots of hostages.
With the Holy Roman Infantry breaking, the enemy General and 2-3 units of Feudal Knights start moving up. I broke my troops off the pursuit and got ready to take the charge; in the meantime, the enemy General had rushed maybe 3 or 4 yards ahead of his formation. He was about to slam into my line. When, suddenly, a single flaming rock shot off from the German riverbank, arced over the bridge, and landed right on top of the poor bastard. Sent him flying.
So, of course, his unit went into auto-rout and took the rest of his troops with 'em. All told, I got about 5k worth of prisoners in that battle![]()
