Default Missing units after winning a battle?

Got a quick question, that I have not been able to find an answer to. I’ve been playing SS 6.1 for a while now, and on a few occasions, I have seen that after battles I win, some of my very wounded units won’t make it back to the campaign map. For instance, last night while playing The Teutonic Order, I had 5 units of Christ Knights at the end of the battle. Their units left were 1, 3, 6, 15, 29 respectfully. After I won the battle, only 3 units were in the castle I was attacking: 6, 15, and 29. The 1 and 3 units were just gone. Anyone seen that? Any explanation? It’s happened to me a few times now.

    Thanks,

    Verax

There is a minimum number of soldiers required for a unit to exist. If it drops below that due to battle casualties, the unit will be disbanded. I think this number is either 4 or 6.

There is a minimum number, but it applies to an automerge at the end of the battle.

    1) If you end a battle with only 1 guy left in a unit, and there are no other units of that type in your army, that unit survives the battle with just 1 guy in it.

    2) If you end a battle with 1 guy, or below whatever the minimum is (not sure exactly what the minimum is, seems to be a % actually, varies by unit type and the size of your units globally), and you have other units of that type in your army, these smallest units get merged in.

    3) DANGER: This automerge can kill a leader. Lets say you have 2 Generals in a battle, as part of the same army, and one of them gets beat down to just the leader himself. At the end of the battle you will only have 1 General, even though neither was killed/captured during the battle.

do the men get added to larger units of the same type if there's space to include them?

    (was that in RTW?)

As far as I know they just get disbanded.

Why would you want a unit with only 1 and 3 anyway? unless they are final tier units and have experience its much easier to just recruit new units.

also i think they lose xp when replenished...only the one who is...say 4 chevrons...stays but if he gets killed in next battle all will lose....never tested but thats my theory....so its better to recriut from scratch anyway

Not true, in fact the exact opposite is the case.

This is huge, actually, you're killing your xp.

Take a unit with xp and repair it, it will have the exact same xp level when restored to full strength even if it had been reduced to just 1 guy (IMO this is a design flaw, there is no averaging of xp at all, all of the replacements to your units come at exactly the same xp as the surviving cadre). These beat up tiny units are a great source of free xp, if you take the effort to bring them back and repair them.

NEVER use the merge unit function, it doesn't take this into account at all and always merges your units in the worst possible way. When merging, your goal should be to fill as many units to max as possible while still ending with the same total number of units. To max out the free xp from repairing, you should try to merge in a way that leaves your tiny unit with the most xp.
