It is possible. You can get excommunicated but if you give the pope 20000 forins I'm sure he will love you even if you are exommunicated. You have a large chance that you will soon get reconcilled.

I wanted to end the war and papal states wouldn't say yes! In the end i gave back Rome gave 10000 money and 1000 fof 10 turns. lol i went up but didn't get recommunicated

this has happened to me a few times the pope excoms your king but not your faction so your standings stay the same if your leader dies your faction will resume with the standings you have.
i hate kissing the pope's ass and i have killed a few in my time both in battle and by assasin.
but thats what you do when your a tyrant..

It sounds like it is your faction leader that is the problem. If you can spare him then have him killed and you will be instantly reconciled with the Holy one.
The other less honourable alternative is to have the Pope killed.

Slaughter the pope, its always fun to have rome. Sack it, smash all the buildings of rmoney, then gift it and a bit of money to papal states for ceasefire. That way they are trashed and useless and the pope is dead .

Eh. The pope excomm'd me, so I quickly finished wiping Milan off the map, then sacked Rome. I've grown to the point where even an alliance of all of the other Catholic factions wasn't enough to stop me. I'm hoping I'll at least get a bit of a challenge out of Iberia.

already have. now i'm the only one who can stop Mongols, got a bigger army, just its all over the place, only have 2 stacks in holy lands . I hate the Pope he says stop attacking people when you can kill them, France had 3 lefted when the pope siad stop. then france attacked me 3 turns later when i moved my troops into germany. After about 5 turns after france attacked me they only have one city lefted. But The Pope said stop attacking HRE so i have to keep moving my troops back.

trick them to move into your lands. u won't get excommunicating if your attack france/hre's armies in your land. the pope will see it as self defence
(tough u just better check u don't get that message "attacking them will result in excommunication. are you sure you want attack them?". just to be sure...)
