I just finished reading a chapter in "Warfare in the Medieval World" by Brian Todd Carey (good read by the way) I read about the battles of Mortarten 1315, Laupen 1339, and Sempach 1386. Halberds work great and I thought to try halberds in SS to see if they were better than in MTW2 So I tried them and after playing a couple custom battles I was rather surprised to find them useless.
So I did a couple one on one unit custom battles. With no upgrades for either unit in all tests, against militia spearmen they can just barely win, granted that they charge the spearmen. Other way around with them receiving the charge, the halberdeirs spearwall does nothing, they will lose 10-15 men in the charge with the attackers losing maybe 1 man. Thats ridiculous, that halberd formation looks deadly, anyone dumb enough to charge it should receive at least 10 to 15, 16 casualties.
Also if you match them against any kind of dismounted knight they do pitifully, despite having a armour piercing weapon thats designed to kill knights.
Against light armored seargents cavalry, at least the halberd spearwall takes out quite a few in the charge.
I think (IMO) that this should be looked into.
