I thought id write up my top 10 things i want 2 change about vanilla RTW so that evry1 making new RTW mods can keep these in mind.
THE TOP 10 THINGS I WOULD CHANGE ABOUT VANILLA RTW: (originally posted in RTW General Discussion under thread: "future rome/classical age game, wants besides improved AI)
1. i would make armies suffer attrition damage when crossing extremely difficult terrain (the Alps, large rivers, etc.) and add "logistical skill" to the skill departments (command, management, influence, etc.) of fam members/gens. The greater the logistical skill of a gen, the less damage and the less chance one would have of suffering damage.
2. Also, i would make the morale of an army on the campaign map a factor, much like happiness in settlements. morale would rise or fall according to frequent defeats/victories, encounters with plague, costly victories, etc. Armies would have their own exp as an army, apart from the exp of individual units. the more experienced an army was, the less likely they would b to rebel. a rebellious/mutinous army could join the "brigands" or be taken to a settlement for decimationhowever, there would be the danger that the rebel solidiers could sieze the city (for the rebel faction, of course) if there was enough of them and/or if the people in the city were unhappy.
3. I would make it possible to fight naval battles on the battle map.
4. i would try to make the passing of time more relative, and/or give armies/characters/navies more movement pts per turn depending on terrain difficulty and distance. navies especially would have more movement pts.
5. I would make it possible to take prisoners after a battle. it would go something like this: when the u or ur enemy is routed the victor can pursue the routers and kill them as usual. there will, however, appear a flag with the victor's faction's symbol on it. if 1 of the victor's units reaches the flag all enemy units still on the battlefield will immediately be "captured" bcause their retreat is blocked. this would only b possible once the enemy has fully routed. the victor can then choose from options much like after the capture of a city. the victor could ransom his defeated enemy, enslave them, execute them, force them 2 join his army, etc. each option would have its own risks and effects.
6. i would change the way routing units/armies could flee the battlefield. As soon as the full rout began, a countdown would begin like after a city plaza is captured. the victor could pursue the vanquished for as long as there was time. after the time is up, the remaining routers will have "gotten away." i hate the whole "red line" thing.
7. i would make it possible for lone characters and family members to be killed while on the campaign map through other things besides plague and assasination. there could be animal attacks, starvation, thirst, etc., especially in the countryside/wilderness. also, characters and fam members can b captured, killed, or put up for ransom by marauding armies. armies can do this to diplomats too, but this will negatively affect that faction's diplomatic success rate. Captured characters and fam members could escape (especially spies and assasins) if they are not killed or sold bfore thenAssasins will have the option of trying to kill the leader of their captors while escaping.
8. When unit(s) rout u could choose 2 execute them for cowardice after a battle
9. The Marius event would happen in the actual yr. Gaius Marius began his reforms, not when 1 of ur city reaches huge size
10. The Roman "Gladiator Uprising" would b an actual event like the Marius Event, and would happen in the actual yr. Spartacus led his first uprising. Also, there would be an actual rebel gen named Spartacus who has high command ability., and when he is killed/captured, popular support for the rebels among the people and morale among the rebels would fall drastically.
