    Default DLV-RPG

This thread is a continue of other post...
You reach a point in the game. You earn 500 000 f. and about 20 regions. The year is about 1250-1270. Then you start to feel your sleepy jaw taking a nap... What do you do...

    1. You abandon you ship(campaign) and go look for a new one.
    2. You try RL.
    3. You go DLV-RPG.

My question: I know somebody else RPG this game from time to time, please share any experience?

NO! It's not just not for nerds; like me and Harry
Thorolf was thus armed. Then Thorolf became so furious that he cast his shield on his back, and, grasping his halberd with both hands, bounded forward dealing cut and thrust on either side. Men sprang away from him both ways, but he slew many. Thus he cleared the way forward to earl Hring's standard, and then nothing could stop him. He slew the man who bore the earl's standard, and cut down the standard-pole. After that he lunged with his halberd at the earl's breast, driving it right through mail and body, so that it came out at the shoulders; and he lifted him up on the halberd over his head, and planted the butt-end in the ground. There on the weapon the earl breathed out his life in sight of all, both friends and foes. [...] 53, Egil's Saga
I must tell you here of some amusing tricks the Comte d'Eu played on us. I had made a sort of house for myself in which my knights and I used to eat, sitting so as to get the light from the door, which, as it happened, faced the Comte d'Eu's quarters. The count, who was a very ingenious fellow, had rigged up a miniature ballistic machine with which he could throw stones into my tent. He would watch us as we were having our meal, adjust his machine to suit the length of our table, and then let fly at us, breaking our pots and glasses.

I try to role-play the actions of my characters as much as possible. Coming from a game like Crusader Kings (and I even have an on-going AAR on the Paradox forums) I go to great lengths to make my characters seem plausible, even if it does hurt me in the long run. I will make certain characters not like each other, I will try to RP out the kings having vassals who control certain cities and that they may or may not send troops to aid their liege. I try to give my characters goals which often times conflict with the goals of another character. I try to include political intrigue by not doing smart things like moving my rebellious generals out of their cities, or giving low-loyalty generals fewer resources if I feel that they could out-wit the king.

All in all, since I love writing AARs I try to play DLV as if I were going to write an AAR for it, including character development at the cost of campaign efficiency- heck I have lost a ton of battles by purposefully doing stupid things because I felt that is what the general would do!

So no, you are not alone.

I generally try to roleplay my family members based on their traits. A high dread general will execute any prisoners. A chivalrous one would let them go. A crazy general will charge right into a wall of spearpoints and die a fool's death.

I've also tried to deliberately manufacture civil wars based on the crazy line of succession that the game sometimes uses. I had one game where a surviving son of a soon-to-be-deceased king was passed over by the game in favor of a son of his deceased brother. Once said king died, I stripped the one son of all of his titles to make him rebellious and put him at the head of a sizable army. Eventually he did rebel, and I had to send one of my other generals to fight him.

I roleplayed it like the son was angry that he was passed over for succession by his late father, and decided to seize the throne himself by force. It weakened my kingdom enough that my neighbors invaded and I had to fight them off while resolving the civil war as well.

Oh, and nutranurse, I'm also a veteran of CK. If there was ever a game that combined the diplomacy and intrigue of CK with the battle system from MTW/DLV, it would be the perfect RPG/strategy game.

Well, I suppose it has nothing to do with RP but a genuine king (first son of, first son of, etc. right back to the first king) who is also a knight grand cross is quite an achievement.

Only managed it once so far and I was very pleased with myself when I did

That's quite an accomplishment. I tend to park my kings in the capital once their heir comes of age and let them sit until they die. The heir then does all the campaigning until his heir comes of age, and so on. The only exception I might make is if the pope himself requests that my king join a crusade to "personally demonstrate his faith".

Although the king might refuse if he's not very pious...

To do it I had to stop my heir from having babies so that the line of succession left my main family. Suffered through civil wars while fighting the enemies of the realm constantly with my true heir. In the end I had to find a way to kill off half of my family to get the crown back in the rightful kings hands.

    Much fun

That does sound interesting. I may have to try that one of these games.

Anyway, the line of succession is screwy in this game. I don't know why they removed the ability to choose our own heirs. I always try to make sure that only the oldest son is married and has children, so that the line of succession is passed properly from father to oldest son.

I also modded the game files so that princesses come of age at 14 and retire at 18. They have 8 turns to find a husband and then they are removed from the family tree forever. This keeps princesses from spamming the map and holding a slot that would block a male child from being born (since the game limits families to 4 kids). I hate having my king have all daughters, with not a son in sight.

This does help to keep the family tree looking good. I like seeing all my kings down the left hand side of the screen. The only drawback is that sometimes it leaves me short of family members once my kingdom starts expanding, since only the oldest son is allowed to marry and have children. I used to let the other sons marry once the future heir had come of age, but that led to succession issues a few decades in.

Still, it sucks that I have to do it that way just to keep the family tree looking "right". I wish there was a way to import the "choose faction heir" feature from RTW.
