Default A few things you've learned?

What have you learned thats helpful in playing M2TW?

The most important i'd say is garrison bordering settlements,
Connect Europe with A series of Paved road for maximum defence throughout your Empire with quick travel to spots in trouble, and
    Big trade.

Go ahead blow away me and other viewers with ideas and points of view for future refrences that we all may try out.

The popes a d*ck, lacks morals and logic and needs to be subjugated

Progress is pointless as it will be inevitably destroyed by the timurids and or mongols

More srsly - Don't leave settlements with small garrisons when they border Milan

To get rid of crap generals put them on a fleet of 1 boat and valiantly attack large rebel fleets

Hah, that is awesome. I've never thought to do that before, normally I use my bad generals as a suicide squad in pitched battles (though you have another character as the actual general, as the morale loss would be unacceptable).

When I had a plagueridden general I wanted gone, I took him and him alone, and attacked a large macedonian army, he survived but lost, and a couple turns later, all my settlements were free from plague.'

i attacked another army, and wat do ya know, he survived. but lost. what does he do but pass through 3 settlements on his retreat. he still had the plague, the settlements didnt. before.

and so the plague devestated by cities beyond repair.

stupid. note to the wise:the ships work better.

Train lots of ranged units and place them on top of a steep hill. Have infantry further down the hill to defend against aggressors and watch your archers rack up kills by the score.

A few units of Crossbowmen can work absolute wonders, whether it's to decimate armoured knights on a flank (before you charge it) or to assassinate enemy Generals from very far away.

I've also learned that is nigh-impossible to make peace with the sasauge eating Germans (HRE) once they start a war with you.

Their foul and inferior ways disturb me greatly. It dosn't matter how many times I destroy their armies, how many times I try end the war, how many sanctions from the Pope - they never, ever make peace.

I would conquer them, but I can't really imagine why Milan would even want dominion over Germany. It's so bloody cold and the beer's awful.

Hmm have you tried to gift them a region or two and some large bribes?
Maybe putting a new faction leader on the throne might help, the more authority the better chance you have of making deals.. or maybe that is diplomacy skill for diplomats :s

Unfortunately I think it may be predetermined by the AI. Defeating Milan is priority number one for the Holy Roman Empire.

Playing as the HRE I usually want to destroy the Milanese or Venetians first.

HRE has excellent late period units so pretty much you just gotta survive and build up......
