    Default Ever had this happen?

I was in a siege battle as the defender. I believe the castle was Caen. Anyway, I was mopping up a French army which attacked me, and there was one unit standing just outside my walls. Xbows. still firing at my spearmen on the wall. No problem, so I send my general to kill them, but he won't attack. Now mind you, this is the last French unit on the field. The crossbowmen are outside the wall, around the corner from the gate, at the side of the castle. This is when I notice that the mini-map symbol for them is over by the gate. I send units over that way, and lo and behold, I find more and more isolated knots of 4 and 5 xbows (individual men) standing around hung up on towers and rocks and other terrain and structures. I had to go all over the castle finding these %&^&ers and killing them by making my units walk on top of them (the would not attack, instead just would go "HAH!" and then say "Orders Completed Milord"). The battle would not end until I had scoured my entire outer wall from the gatehouse to the back of the left side for individual men stuck on terrain and parts of my castle... Anyone ever seen this, or know how to prevent?

I think you had already won the battle, and chose to hunt them down. After they flee you cannot kill them, rather capture them for ransom or execution
If you face me in battle you had better rout quickly, or you might be captured...

no he means something else. your general (or any unit for that matter) will chase/attack the center point of a unit. if a unit (like the Xbows in your case) are very spread out becouse of bad pathfinding (walking against trees, rocks, walls and the like) then they will run between that.

like this (x = crossbow men, Y= general, z= Rock)

    xxxxx
    zzzzz
    zzzzz

That happens to me alot, I try to withdraw some soldiers from combat, and a few of them got wrapped around the enemy, and just stayed there.

I had a similar problem a while ago. I was chasing down one last unit of the enemy army and noticed that my cavalry was just walking alongside the fleeing enemy.

Turned out that the enemy unit was spread over like half the map, with some on the east boundary of the map and some on the west. My cavalry was obviously picking out the center point among all those soldiers, which was empty. I also had to manually move my cavalry over the soldiers and then attack them and repeat it until I got rid of everyone. Was very annoying.

Come to think of it, it was after defending a castle as well... very odd :hmmm:

Pathfinding in sieges is horrible. That is why I auto resolve them most of the time. Situations like the one you just described have been quite common in my campaigns. Either set a time limit in battles, auto resolve them, or try to bear with it.

well it's not a game breaker just manually select your soldiers (or missile units) and move them on top of where the enemy is (not "attack") . then when they are right standing next to them press attack! then they will start hacking and butchering. sometimes their not all dead before the horses start running to the centre point again, so u gotta do it again...

ps: autoresolve in siege battles where your equally numbered but slightly better will almost always give you a better result then trying it yourself...

This is a problem with no obvious solution. Auto resolve is not a solution if the point of the game for you is to do the field battles. As others have said, patience to wipe the disorganized unit is needed. Sometimes you will still win on end battle even if the entire enemy is broken, but why take a chance on the result after a glorious and possibly heroic battle?

The 'path finding' really does suck. I was always disappointing that you couldn't put units in courtyards between buildings or archers on roofs-- until I found that units got stuck on simple things like walls and behind siege towers or actually climb up a ladder to a broken part of a wall and die as soon as they set foot on the wall itself.

A good solution is to run a unit next to one of the enemy and the tell to attack, usually they'll swing they're sword a few times and problems solves, also Cavalry will never attack something standing right next to a wall/gate(atleast in my experiance)

This totally happens to me all the time, but not because of rocks getting in the way of units. It usually happens when they rout in more than one direction. I have a picture of some Danes actually running back into the field after routing the wrong way. I stood around waiting for the battle to end for quite a while before I noticed them running back onto the map. You can see I was actually reforming my line because I got bored of waiting. That's why all those guys are walking.

Gah this always happens to me in siege battles.

Men getting stuck in/around/behind/on top of walls and I can't kill them.

It sucks because I like playing without a time limit because I spend a lot of time in regular battles forming lines and organizing my men.

I wish you could set the time limit for siege battles and not regular ones.

Also, I hate auto-resolving anything because I always win fighting them myself with more surviving men than if I auto-resolve it.

Just got back from my campaign where I was trying to end a siege on my city where I had two armies against their five attacking units, the odds were 3 to 1 in my favor, and the auto resolve made me lose a crushing defeat and two of my family members died.

It happened to me few times, it's the fact that you choose to hunt them down and some pathfinding issues. But it just takes some moping up by the cavalry and the problem is solved.
