Default For Newbies and noobs only

    Hi newbie,

hi noob, hi beginner, hi amateur, hi novice,

Are you new with DLV mod ? If you are ...

.... are u interested in learning how to play the DLV mod ?
Do u want to know how to start a campaign ?
Do u want to know how to manage your empire ?
Do u want to know how to gain gov. points and mil. points ?
You want to know how to increase and to keep your points ?
Do u want to know which faction would be easy to start with and which one is too difficult for noobs ?
Do u want help "step by step" instead of reading lots of instructions ?
Do u want to learn to play without any cheats in VH/VH settings ?
Are u interested in getting 120 gov points within first 30 years ?
You also want to get money > 100.000f ?
Do u want a good city : castle ratio ?
    Do u want...o.k. I stop it now...sry.

If more than one newie is really interested in it I would offer to answer all these questions again (because most of it is already answered from many helpful ppl. before incl. all the treads, handbooks and guide lines for new players)
I can give a step by step instruction from my experience I made with DLV version 5.0 - 5.83. So it wont be "The Way" of playing it, it would be "a way" to playing it, just like a newbie like me is playing the mod.

Compared to skilled DLV players I am also a bloody noob I would say, maybe I am an advanced noob after few experiences and nowadays able to win DLV campaigns in VH/VH settings with 120gov. and 100 mil. points in my pocket.

My offer would be to explain step by step (lets say at least for the first 30 years) how to get money, points, good governors, good relations, good papal standing, good running economy, balanced empire extension ....

    Have a nice weekend

Nice initiative I would be interested in this.

Ive been trying to start up a campaign with England for the past 2 hours but I keep ending up with -30.000 fl after less than 10 turns. No armies in the field, no agents outside my regions and all cities have a govenor and the highest possible tax without dropping under the 100% public order. First I spend my money on random income buildings in my cities (roads, farms, etc) After that I tried building mines because in my experience they always bring in a lot of cash. Didnt really make a difference though.

I dont know what I do wrong. Ive been able to start up campaigns with both HRR and Byzantines but so far no luck with England. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

np, here u are with help from Furin (version 5.74 is a bit easier than 5.83 beta due to easier diplomacy) So this tutorial does not work identical with 5.83 but its a nice way to start successful with England.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Okay here's a quick starter's help for England... (5.7)

-turn 1: move princess over to France and get marryage alliance with france, before that let her ask for trade rights, move the diplomat towards the german regions, towards central italy, move the caen army into the castle, get the caen general on the ship and move him into london, that will make him a governor and you need money first, same with the general in the nottingham region, off to london he goes, don't develop nottingham or caen yet, use the movement points of the king and the relocationg generals to build some towers in the london region, move the english merchant from the caen region towards the silver near frankfurt, move both cogs into the harbor in caen and disband one, move the spy from nottingham towards london, move the cardinal immidiatly northwards and denouce the heretic in the nottingham region, build a scholarium in london

-turn2: flemish princess approaches caen and asks for trade rights, say yes and also marry her to your faction heir, flanders becomes your ally, you will get a mission, if the mission is "take rebel settlement Southhampton" forget it, if the mission is "get trade rights with germany for 2500" great, lets's do that, give the ancillary for london to your faction heir, don't move your generals yet, as it's winter, move the cardinal towards london, move the diplomat towards central italy target is the pope, grab the garrison of caen and move it on the ship, then drop it off in the london region, leave behind one units of peasants

-turn3 move the king on the ship and let him garrison caen, the second prince moves into the nottingham region, builds towers to keep the rebel spawn away and then garrisons nottingham castle, diplomat should be near rome now, depending on missions either talk to german/venice/milan first or go straight for rome, cardinal ships over to the mainland and begins moving towards narbonne, merchant should be on a silver in Frankfurt by now and will start generating good money, get all the soldiers into london, get the spy on the mainland so you can start spying for governors points, you will need at least ten points to build markets

-turn4 continue with above strategy, it's winter again and not much else is doable

-turn5 a new prince comes of age, immidiatly board him and get him to london for education, take as much army as you can from london and move it to nottingham, build towers, contact the pope, give him trade rights, gift him military access, gift him map info, ally with him, check the crusade targets and your papal standing but don't ask for a crusade yet

-turn6 winter again, if you have the diplomat missions you are lucky, else just put your diplomat next to venice and wait for the siciliany princess that comes sooner or later, this can save you a trip down to nalpes, you can either give every faction there trade rights immidiatly and move on with the diplomat (brings standing, trade and gov points), or wait for the mission that gives 2500 (only good if the mission comes immidiatly, else the diplomat costs too much), amry should have arrived in nottingham by now and should be spear militia + peasant archers

-turn7 grab the prince from nottingham + army, sail the ship from caen harbor next to nottingham, put the army on the ship, sail around the northern rebel fort and besiege the town north to nottingham, build 2 rams, 4 ladders, you must conquer that town in the next turn so your castle/city ratio is 50/50 again and you can start making money, begin to spy in the mainland so your gov points increase, it#s your choice if you just go for 20 gov points at first or if you go to the max, try to concentrate on 95% targets like merchants, diplomats and princesses, only spying on other factions gives you points, rebels don't give you points, if you can afford it recruit the one unit of welsh longbowmen for the assault on edinburgh, sail the ship back to caen harbor so the rebels don't get it

-turn8 take edinburgh and occupy it, leave behind 4 units of spears, disband the welsh longbows if you are short on cash, put the rest of the army back on the ship (which comes back from caen harbor), and drop it into the nottingham region , if possible put it into the castle, sail the ship back to caen, check your papal standing again

-turn9 ask for a crusade on narbonne, if narbonne is not in the list take an other rebel target (damascus, malta whatever, as long as it's the rebels), move the army from nottingham towards london

-turn10 the pope asks you to join the crusade for 2500 bucks, great let's do that, faction heir joins the crusade with the army which came back from nottingham, now you have 2500 bucks, access to crusader sergeants and crusader knights and a crusade against the rebels, that's all you need to clear out the huge rebel stack in the southhampton region, once this huge stack is gone (it's mostly longbowmen so the crusader knights will kill them), move the army but not the heir on the ship, sail over to caen and let your king take leadership of that army, recruit the crusader sergeants and knights from the caen region and sail back the fresh crusaders to london while the king goes off to the crusade target (hopefully narbonne) with the battered army, merge the battered troops and refill the ranks with mercs, the heir can take over the fresh troops, fill up with militia and mercs and kill the rebel stack in the london region, after killing those rebels move inside london and disband the crusading forces (one by one so you get the maximum "used military size")

-turnx try to get the crusade target with the king, possible if it is narbonne, if it is damascus just forget about it, the king is too old to reach it, rather move inside caen and disband the troops and wait out the crusade

From there on you can start developing your regions and forces, take southhampton once the council offers 10.000, blockade bremen for a while, should be easy from there on, reinforce caen first, get the fort in caen but don't touch the fort in Angers or else the french will besiege it and attack you even before the first dark age, not very good, try to grab caernarvon before the irish take it, but that's kinda hard, try to get dumfries, take out the forts there and station troops at the northern border, once caen and the north is secure finally take the forts in london and southhampton/nottingham, deveop to your liking from there on...

    And ready my hints thread

    My addional advice :
    1st read DLV handbook
    2nd read the http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=169894
3rd read the great strategy guide 5.8 for new players by Xtiaan72 http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=212605

after this reading you definitely will become better.

England campaign: Very first I sold stable and port in Caen and than Caen by itself for 10.000f to Flanders and used the complete Caen army to get York early in the game. It will create later in game more money than London... get merchants to all 4 marble resources in Spain (will give you very early lots of money 600 to 2500 each)...e.t.c.

Thanks for the quick reply! I gave up after I made the post and started with Turkey which goes pretty well but I will definatley look into this soon.

One thing I noticed right away, Im playing the historical campaign and I think some of the tips are for the default campaign. For example Southhampton is already mine at the start. Forgot to tell that in my first post.

Thanks again, you'll get + rep from me as soon as I figure out how to do that

I'm sure someone was already working on a DLV handbook type of thing - I think Xtiaan72?

Maybe you should help contribute to it with him with like a start-up guide for the first 30 years or similar,

    Yeah,

I also want to ask the DLV admin to close this tread.
    No need for it.

when making a bank, in the early game it is important to save money. only spend on economic buildings and dont rush to take rebel settlements and others because it drains the early income you need. the beauty of this game is things take time, alot of time, to start rolling. you have time, simply focus on your core cities and hope u dont lose them in the dark ages.

I chose the Turks in my current campaign, i never finished the Flemish one but hey it was fun till I got bored with it. Now, with the dark ages I ran to Baghdad and was pwning there with Mosul but of course lose that when the Horde came. So, now all I have is the island of Cyprus and with two very small and not economic really towns I still have a very positive income. Just dont do much, till u have loads of cash, save for your assaults if you siege a town and u have 2k, expect to be in the red the next 10 turns.

Also, if you like, the settlement cost option at the beggining will definitely help you save some money in the early game, if you're like me you dont use many settlements anyway, but I've included this in my current campaign because the Flemish people, only with the Caribbean, were rich beyond belief! I gave away 100,000's to struggling AI's.. didnt really help much.

One thing I loved, is that now the AI shows up in the Americas.. but, i really think they should do more to take and hold it, so far they just stand around.

The BIGGEST thing you can do, is send the big expensive units to forts, 4 at a time, and then only keep in the main cities the free garrisons and whatnot. trim trim trim ur military daily!!
