) watch out for those rebels that are big in numbers(unit stacks) and look like a normal general ....if you scout him you will see in his traits list this line :
Faction Leader
even if it's a rebel army he will ALWAYS attack you cities/castles if they step on your region...he will just pass by your city/castel only if he is extremly garisoned with troops :|
good luck with the rebels

THe second time I started I put more troops in! Had almost 12 but the same guy came with a full stack, lost the battle by a inch... The third time they left frankfurt alone for a whiile and managed to build up...Had another stack going after a castle but they did not attack. Do watchtowers do anything for that?
It is amazing how important the first few turns are, if you are attacked you are doomed. Or you could not get merchants and a diplomat and just build up military but ot would take much longer to start building infrastructure...
GREAT GREAT GREAT
No ctds YET (fingers crossed)
Lol I must have done something right without knowing it... Im playing as HRR aswell. That faction leader outside Frankfurt was just standing there untill I sandwitched his butt between two armies of mine.
I have a similar problem over in England... Fighting full stack rebels with a great leader at their head. My tactic is to fight him with a wall of spearmen supporting by exotic mercs. I also have an AI reinforcement army lead by a captain coming in on horseback from elsewhere on the battlefield. Even if my reinforcement army is only a few units - they draw off and cause quite a bit of drama in the enemy ranks. It gives my main attacking army (usually led by my prince) a good fighting chance.
I can destroy entire rebel armies with 3 units of cavalry... (just incase they themselves have a bodyguard unit). Otherwise perhaps 2, not sure what the fuss is about them
Of course it's harder now because of the cavalry spread, but I make it work for me ^^
Build watchtowers on your borders and the rebel armies will move from tower to tower and stay away from your cities until you're ready to fight them. The first thing I always do is build towers on my borders, to reveal the map and keep the rebels away from my cities. It costs money and will slow down your expansion early on, but it gives me time to build an army to take out the rebels without worrying about them sacking my cities.
