    Default Is it just me... or do Citadels seem nigh impossible to get? +Adjusting Citadel pop req

    Hi all, I'm playing on Regular SS 6.1 and it seems that to reach the population of 16,000 for Citadels is nigh impossible ( Well it takes a lot of patience), as I said. The game can get dull after 120 turns of Medium infantry with a few elite units, The game doesn't really get diversify until those Unique Knights and Infantry get involved... Why is the population set at 16,000? Is there any way I can lower it? What do you guys think about having it that high?

    Also if anyone could kindly tell me how to edit the population requirement for Citadels, that'd be great!

    The best way to increase population, is to drop a high-chivalry general in that castle. Each point of chivalry gives 0.5% population growth!
    So, go crusading. A successfull crusade usually gives a general with 5-6 chivalry, which is more than enough to get citadels quickly.

    I believe disbanded units are added to the population as well. Peasant migrations are not difficult to do.

    Afraid not. That was a feature in Rome that was not included in M2TW.

    At the bottom of descr_settlement_mechanics.xml in the SS\data folder.

    Thanks much! +rep

    Soo... if its .xml how CAN i edit it? xD im a n00b when it comes to this stuff?

    I have this message when I do try to save my edit:

    "Cannot create the C:/ blah blah blah Make sure the path and file name are correct"

    So, is this cause I used word to edit it, and then tried to save it as .xml? xD I'm so ignorant on this stuff, what program should I use for editing, or what AM i doing wrong.

    PS: Isn't set to "read only" so I dont think thats the problem.. It opens by default on xml editor- but, thats on like, and internet page and I cannot edit anythng.

    Thanks in advance.

    In the late-era campaign, at around turn 100 (? maybe 80 or so... :S) I conquered acre as Venice, and a couple of turns later it became a citadel. Mind you, by then, I had VHI, muskets and culverins in Jerusalem, Venice and Constantinople :S

    Any succesful Crusade will give you a Citadel in no-time. Just bring the General home and drop him in a Fortress.

    If you play pagan or orthodox and thus can't go on crusade you can use lots of horse archers and kill all but one or two routers, capture 2 and release them also you could try and fight battles against bad odds and kill/capture less than 50% of the enemy(also gives chivalry)

    Just edit it with notepad. Right-click on the file and choose "Open With..."

    I did! Haha, thats what I tried and the error message I presented earlier comes up.

    Oh God I got it, silly ways. I copy'd the file to desktop and edited it at desktop, than replaced the file... I don't know why it needs to be so roundabout.. anyways thanks!

    Jesus! lol sorry for the nagging edits. I updated the files and to my knowledge did everything correctly, but I did a little test on Nottingham and no changes to effect, still requires 15,000 population... heres the code of what I changed or w/e.. I changed in Citadel base=9000 opposed to base=15000... any ideas as tio why its not taking effect?

    - <population_levels>
    - <!-- city -->
    <level name="village" base="500" upgrade="1000" min="500" max="1500" />

    <level name="town" base="1000" upgrade="3000" min="500" max="5000" />

    <level name="large_town" base="3000" upgrade="8000" min="500" max="12000" />

    <level name="city" base="8000" upgrade="15000" min="500" max="25000" />

    <level name="large_city" base="15000" upgrade="30000" min="500" max="60000" />

    <level name="huge_city" base="30000" min="500" max="120000" />

    - <!-- castle -->
    <level name="moot_and_bailey" base="500" upgrade="1000" min="500" max="1500" />

    <level name="wooden_castle" base="1000" upgrade="2500" min="500" max="5000" />

    <level name="castle" base="2500" upgrade="7500" min="500" max="12000" />

    <level name="fortress" base="7500" upgrade="15000" min="500" max="25000" />

    <level name="citadel" base="9000" upgrade="30000" min="500" max="50000" />

    </population_levels>

    I'd change the fortress upgrade=15000 to 9000 too. Maybe that's the reason?
    And probably start a new game, but not sure about that.

    And I have 2 citadels with England in my campaign. Both built up with the help of chivalric (crusader) generals.

    The test I did was a new campaign, using add_population cheat just to see if it worked. Weird, huh?
    I guess I'll stick to Chivalry, not that bad.

    I had the same problem, it was vista for me, just right click and select properties, then make sure regular users have all privileges not just administrators.
    If you face me in battle you had better rout quickly, or you might be captured...

    Pretty sure everyone does have full rights, still doesn't do anything.

    I do play on vista though >_>

    Playing in the late era campaign helps you get citadels faster as well, since many settlements begin already at the fortress level. Late era + high chivalry can get you to citadel/huge city very quickly -- in fact, even too quickly if you're agressive enough with it. In my venetian late era campaign in turn 85ish or so I already have a good handful of citadels, though not too many top tier buildings buildings yet.
