Who here is for world peace? Everyone says they want it but nobody ever does it. If we get everyone on this forum to agree to not launch rockets or invade or murder someone else, than that will be the first step to world peace.

I, Templar Hospitaller, promise to never launch rockets, invade, or murder someone else, except on Total War. Which I will do. A lot.

The problem is that every nation in the world wants infinite peace, but peace on their terms and to their benefit. And as that will most likely never be accepted by the rest of the world, war is a useful tool as a substitute.

my personal opinion on the subject is that a religious group will see it as the confirmation of the apocalypse as described, and assassinate whoever is responsible. Or start a war over it.

No, peace is not good. Say robots, zombies, aliens, or any combination threatened humanity. We need to know how to fight- just in case. Because they are coming.
And without war their would be no total war games. Or probably most games in general. Just the Sims.

Peace? There can be no PEACE! Peace cause apathy and stagnation. Much rather have serious rivals.

Human is superpredator of our times. No other natural enemies.
Two others come to mind. Shark and tyranosaurus.
Shark is the same and unchanged, unevolved animal for hundreds of millions years now. They have no enemy at all. Tyranosaurus is no more. They also had no enemy. Also, sharks may also die out unless they evolve.

So it's choice of progress through conflict, evolving to being optimal predator, but having no need to advance and becoming extinct. Guess what I choose.

I personally like the idea that we may even evolve beyond the need for war to advance. But that's probably just unreal romantic idea.

Whats peace to someone whos starving? Whats peace to a person under constant threat? whats peace to the poor? Whats peace to someone with no house?
Not much right? But in human nature your happiness is relative to other peoples wealth rather then your own.
So if you upgrade "no home" to "slum" when someone nearby is living in a nice house, to you it will be almost like having no house, and if you have a house and someone nearby has a mansion it will be again be pretty similar. (Of course the occasional person in a mansion makes no difference, it would be more like everyone except you living in mansions) So in theory the only way to peace is to have near equality.
But life is boring if were all the same ,So we find reasons to make it more interesting through division, and conflict begins again.
Its kind of an endless cycle, as soon as society becomes prosporous enough to not need to go to war over inequality, You end up starting another conflict through division and someone loses resources again.
