Well, it gets rid of fictional units (like Roman ninjas), combines the three Roman families from RTW (totally unhistorical) into a unified Rome faction, changes some factions around, introduces an auxilia stage recruiting system with Area of Recruitment troops (so you can recruit local troops at various settlements, but can't recruit your standard faction units until much later, representing the assimilation of a conquered settlement into your empire), reskins many units to make them more historical (like doing away with the lorica segmentata Hollywood Romans since that comes in a later time period), rebalances unit stats (and introduces many, many new units), has longer battles requiring better tactics, and in general is just awesome. I'm sure that there are many other changes that I can't think of right off the top of my head.

I would reccomend RTW: ExRM if you have the Barbarian Invasion expansion pack, and if not, the RTW: PE.

I hope that is somewhat of a help.
Birthdays are healthy for you. Statistics show that those who have more of them live longer.

Hiya, kopite! The list of changes is really too long to enumerate, but here's the short version of what's been changed:
    Recruitment
    Buildings
    Units
    Tactical AI
    Ships
    Strat map graphics
    Battle map graphics
The whole game--this mod actually converts Rome: Total War into Master of Orion 2

Ok, I'm making the last one up. But pretty much everything else is changed from Vanilla. Seriously, name a section and it's been changed. The unit recruitment is the best example, though. The variety of units is much larger and more historical, and unit recruitment better reflects the complexities of integrating a conquered region into your empire.

One more thing I addore: increased defence of all units, so your battles won't end in the first minute...

When playing as Rome (which is all I can comment on at the moment) you will notice it's harder to expand quickly and steamroller the known world.

You will have to nurse the public order of newly captured territories. Early on you will have to either conquer a few cities OR disband your army. If you do neither and have armies standing around doing nothing you will get into debt.

The thing I really love is the auxilia system - simply put you will be able to recruit (with a bit of building and patience) units local to the areas you are in. It makes things very interesting on a long campaign, as the variety of units keeps you interested on the battlefield as well as on the campaign map. You need to look after your "core" troops for your faction as reinforcements for those are a long way away (unless you get a supply chain of troops going).

On the battlefield you need to watch your flanks, the AI generally tries to skirmish before the main battle AI cavalry will hunting down your light troops and AI heavy infantry will try to mince your cavalry if they get the chance and your hestati will be targetted by the AI like the first line lower-quality troops that they are.

Why don'you simply try it yourself?

Take a look here: RTR - Downloads and Mod Index
All RTR mods and submods are listed there...

But as has been said before, I would advice you to use the Extended Realism Mod (ExRM) if you have the Barbarian invasion expansion pack. And if you only have RTW, then use RTR-Platinum Edition (RTR-PE) with the "-mod switch" (this is explained in the link above, under the heading: RTR Platinum "-mod switch").

Good luck with trying some of those awesome mods

The ExRM will work if you have RTW without BI, too, but you need to do a little tweaking to get it to run.
