Unspecified Error CTD on Battle Load

I just bought M2TW Gold edition... and I'm getting a CTD on the load screen when going into battle.

The loading bar either goes half-way or completely fills, then I get the CTD + "Unspecified Error".

This is 100% reproduceable - it happens every time; I haven't been able to get into a battle. Happens whether it's a quick, historical, or in-campaign battle.

I guess what I bought includes the latest patch. I have DX 9.0c and .NET Framework 3.0+ installed. I've tried lowering the graphics settings to low.

Campaign mode works just fine.

I put in the error-logging bit in the .cfg, the log file doesn't appear to contain any useful information.

No problems with any other games or other software. I just installed RTW on this computer and it does have the same exact problem, however.

Any ideas?

You will be disappointed to know that I have no answers (very sorry) but what is the cfg file and where do you put the code to get the log to come up? Im having a similar problem to you and I am a computer and M2:TW noob lol

As far as I understand, go to the M2TW folder (My Computer -> C drive -> Program Files -> Sega -> Medieval II Total War), there's a file medieval2.preferences.cfg file there, edit it in Notepad and insert the lines you'll find here: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=143183

...I'm probably wrong though since nothing new has appeared in the log file since I did that.

If you are not using a mod, always make a back up of files you intend to change.
Try

Ok, Ive done that and made the game crash but how do I see the log?

The Unspecified Error CTD in battles is something I've had a lot of problems with. My solution was to make sure everything was on minimum settings, and not fight battles with a total of more than about 1,500 soldiers involved. Later on it fixed itself and now I can play battles with about 2,500 without error, and I haven't upgraded my computer for that.

I have a modern computer... not a super gaming rig but I know it can handle M2TW battles.

Regardless I've already tried setting to minimum settings, and still get a crash. Some of the battles would have been extremely small (i.e. 200 soldiers per side).

Also, my log doesn't say anything more than...

Just look in your main Medieval 2 folder, there should be either a text document named system.log or a sub folder named logs containing the same. Copy and paste it here, inside some spoiler tags.

I've just bought medievil 2 Gold edition but it keeps crashing when I enter a battle.

The Britainnia and Americas work perfectly and i can enjoy battles on them but the main game is always crashing.

Not sure how this could be resolved, tryed clearing out my system of files but it still happens.

Kingdoms or its campaigns did nothing to fix Medieval2. If you are fighting battles in Medieval2 and getting ctds, one of the units is probably still bugged.

I've confirmed that my CTD happens regardless of which Kingdoms campaign I choose.

I'm going to try an uninstall-reinstall.

Uninstalled and reinstalled M2TW... no change.

I guess I'll try Sega technical support...

Many units are bugged. Bugged units will cause ctds. With that, all you'll get from tech support is silence.

As far as my opinion, if you bought it just far a first-person-shooter, you wasted your money. This game is a lot more than that for a lot of us.

I got the game because it's a good strategy game, and I bought it because I believe in supporting developers who make good games.

The real-time battles are an integral part of the TW series - they're what sets it apart. Without them... well, IMO a Paradox game has better strategic campaign elements.

Thanks for your help. I guess my recourse is to get a refund.

i have the exact problem... even the only ones working being britannia and americas... only mine happened after i tried unpacking... it got half way through..then just closed..

Ya i got the same problem as they all did... Tried installing etc... But just a few days ago i was playing custom battles... does unpacker have to do anyhting? plz help
