To fire a ballista through a gateway?
I do it all of the time, in fact balliastas make up a part of my usual settlement garrison just for that very purpose.
As for the Paladin, the battle with the Dragon isn't the danger, it's the battle in the heart that he must be wary of.
I find it something quite new if you can fire a ballista thought the gates when they are battering them down.
You can do it in Vanilla.... works in every mod I know of too (Except the ones that disable flaming missiles altogether.). The Ballista is fired after the battering is done when the bulk of their army is trying to squeeze through the entrance. Bombards are even better for this. Just position the Ballista in front of the gate, far back enough that they will be able to obey a fire order. Put something like peasants or Spear Units right in the gateway to slow the enemy when they rush in, and as soon as they batter the gate, manually tell the ballista to fire on whatever unit is in the front of their army with flaming missiles. Easily routs their whole army, sometimes even units on ladders no where near the ballista will rout from it too. It's especially effective if they don't have a general. Add some archers with fire arrows to the walls for increased effectiveness. Spear Militia and a Billasita though, are usually enough to defend settlements in my experience in Vanilla, Kingdoms and Stainless Steel.
As for the Paladin, the battle with the Dragon isn't the danger, it's the battle in the heart that he must be wary of.
I can clear this up for you guys...I have tested it EXTENSIVELY. This is also why XBAI works so very well.
In Vanilla, and most mods only the BAI has difficulty, this is how it was anyways. The CAI has ZERO difficulty settings, none. The only one that does is XAI , because I put many of them in there.
BAI only, I repeat! only the BAI has levels! The only difference in levels is the morale. The last time I checked these files, which was many months ago. Vanilla and most other BAI's have morale going in the WRONG direction for difficulties. It has been wrongly figured from day one.
Please go ahead and try it out. Before you reply. If you put the morale up to about 180-200 you will find that the AI will beat you most of the time, because it has a slight morale advantage.
Levels do not affect fatigue, only morale..but morale and fatigue work together.
We had a big "discussion" about this a few month back.
In the config_ai_battle.xml file
<retreat-counter>
<open>
<easy>140</easy>
<medium>160</medium>
<hard>180</hard>
<very_hard>200</very_hard>
</open>
200 makes the game pretty dang hard. (XAI with KGCM) This bonus is only given to the AI, it is a counter, of when to take a moral check.
The higher the number the less often it takes it, which results in a overall higher moral.
That is how it works, and I have proven and tested it many times. With the old settings being so low, the Human always had the advantage. Morale is very powerful in the game, and if not managed correctly, can unbalance the game, in extreme fashions
BTW You may only use these settings for personal use, you must ask permission for use XAI in parts or whole in any other mod.

Yep thats what EOR is doing. Might be harder then yours as we will have higher moral, and other things
Oh no the picture of my dog disappeared!
@ Dewy
Yes, I was the one to discovered how it actually works and then rewrote the rules first..for XBAI 2.20Plus, had a nasty argument about these and other "radical changes" with the release of XBAI 2.20. The really nice thing is now people have tested and love the XBAI 3.2x. with very few complaints, and alot of challenge. (yes, it is compatible with SS)
See this thread for an explanation: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=189710
BTW, did you ask permission..to use the changes.. Just Kidding (mostly), Guess what! ALL AI's had it bassackwards. (I certainly hope, people that are improving the AI, are giving credit for things discovered in the XAI Files)
Because we have thought "out of the box" others have thought we were "crazy", "mad" or said "you can't do that!"
Of course morale was only the first piece of the puzzle, but it was the most important piece, Balance must be achieved first. Thankfully!! all of our hard work has come to fruition. All you have to do is put the XBAI in just about any "KINGDOMS" mod and you can instantly have real challenge in battles.
I have found more than 200 really unbalances the game, it maybe different in the mod you are working on. I am not criticizing, but super high moral is not the best way to make the game difficult. Slight increases, most gamers wont mind, but after awhile they will just get tired of losing that way.
For EOR, you should look at Condo's BAI mod, it has many similarities to XAI, as we based many ideas on his older work. it can be found in the mods threads for med 2. It is compatible with the Med2 engine.
