Default Keeping it in the family

A lot of times Ive seen people complain about a family member with bad traits and the response has usual been "suicide ship." But I'd rather try and avoid that happening if possible.

Is there any way that I can actually change who my faction heir is without a death? My emperor at the moment has great command, chivalry and piety but hes on his last legs. His son is the complete opposite- unhealthy, no command talent, little if any chivalry and his traits and retinues are a joke. I dont want him to come to power since I can imagine his authority being incredibly low and with an empire as large as mine I need a leader who can control the family members and generals.

So, in short, is there any non homicidal way I can change my faction heir? Cheers

I would say you are lucky to get your emperors son as an heir! At least that makes sense, every time I play it elects some random in law which i dont understand.

Oh and you cant change faction heir i'm afraid. However i understand when the elect a non-direct heir it is done on piety..

Unfortunately not, it's something hardcoded into the game. While this may be appropriate for the factions who historically used primogeniture, it leaves those who didn't in the dust.

What version/mods are you using as I'm getting this problem too.

6.2 apparently has a bug that avoids blood related faction heirs at any cost.

6.1 avoids non-blood related faction heirs at any cost.

    There's a bug fix for 6.2, i believe.

80 years is simply not enough to enjoy all of the fun in the world, and out of it...

You could try and make him a good emperor. Really the only trait you desperately need is Authority, and an easy way to do that is to have him fight in as many battles as you can have him fight. If you have the faction crowns mod, make sure he gets the crown, too

hmm, it's times like this where i really miss Rome:Total war. so even though it's hardcoded, there is no way to make a script that could allow you to set who the heir will be?

please don't flame me here, your talking to a noob modder.

ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female?
    WITNESS: Guess.

Hardcoded basically means that you can't change it no matter what. But you may be able to find some kind of work around but I have yet to see one.

Really? Because I have 6.1 and my new factions leader's adopted son became the heir, even though he had 2 other blood related brothers. Of course two turns later his son matured, and so I had to send the adopted one (who sucked because of my low faction zeal) on a semi-suicide siege to tunis and whatever settlement was closest if he won. He betrayed me and turned rebel

Well, if there are no viable blood related people, they will pick adopted. Even if there is a blood related kid who's 14 or so.

In 6.2 the AI receives some family members at the beginning of the game, as well an additional family member when the faction is "near extinction" due to the number of memebers it has. Now in 6.1 because something like this does not occur, some AI family trees have only 2 active family members in the age 14 up. That means that if you just kill 2 of them during an initial ride on the faction, you'll just destroy the faction (what more, the ai likes to suicide their members on rebels). However this won't happen in 6.2, but on the other hand instead of the faction getting destroyed, a regent will be appointed.

I was just thinking... wouldnīt it be possible to "cheat" your way to a heir??? in the descr_strat.txt you can see that the Factionheir and Factionleader is traits that could be given...

I am currently re-installing the game (damn that Total Combat long wait turn bug!!!) and canīt check it out, but my thought is that you bring up the cheat window after selecting your would-to-be-heir and write

    give_trait this Factionheir 1

probably will be a conflict due to the fact that the original heir still has his trait... perhaps you can "strip" him from title with the same method

    give_trait this Factionheir 0

before giving the title to another general...

i will try this at the end of the week if I have the time... someone else might try and give feedback before that...

    cheers...
