    Default The Military Thread

I know a lot of people on this forum are interested in joining the military, or have served in the military. I thought it would be good to make a thread where those veterans can share their knowledge, where those interested in, or maybe wanting to join the military can ask questions, and where people can just generally discuss those things related with military life.

This is not the place for political discussion. If you want to start flaming about (For example) the US invasion of Iraq, or the Israeli bombing of Gaza. Nor is it a place for nationalistic dick-waving. If you want to do these things, then go someplace else. This is a place for friendly discussion, the sharing of experiences (If you want) and knowledge, and the asking of questions.

I for one am interested in joining the British army in the Paras. Was just wandering if anyone on these forums had served in the Paras?

Nah, I'm more of an Air Force Guy, Para's are awesome though, I knew a guy who was in the Para's said it's tough but worth it.

Got kicked out of the Naval Academy, got back into the USMC b/c of a contractual obligation, I serve in the summers. I love it and wish I could do it full time.

I've heard something about studying in the army: your studies will be payed but you have to sign for 10 years.....

I don't know if I want to do this: my studies will be payed and I will be quite sure I get a job, but, I mean, 10 years is quite long...

    What would you study?

And yeah, 10 years does sound like a long time, but no expenses and a nice job....

How does part time work? I am guessing you are still eligible for being called up.

I was planning on studying military history- but I think I might go for a wider spectrum .

TBH, if I was you, and I could afford it I would go for Uni.

there might be some former Turkish veterans in here but i really doubt any commandos

I've always been interested in joining the RAAC, Royal Australian Armoured Corp. Being and MBT crewman Is something I really aspire to. THough, I want to be atleast fit enough to attempt the armies requirements.
If not that, I'd like to crew an armoured car or the like.
If that fails, I guess I'dtry and fall back on somehting like Air Cav.

Hmmm....I'd like to be a helicopter piolet too...

    Whats the MBT of Australia?

I considered being part of Tank Crew, but decided that I wouldn't like to be cooped up in one and thats not really the kind of action I am looking for. I also considered joining the RAF, but decided against it as I'm scared of heights (Although I still want to be in the Paras, and they hurtle themselves out of planes- but thats more my cup of tea)

Has anyone ever been in any airborne unit before?

No, I think they did a comparison and the Abrams came out on top, by a little bit.

I think Barnaby Jones went through US Airborne training.
