I purchased the "Battle of the Teutoburg Forest" by Peter S Wells in June.
Though I'm yet to have read it, must do so soon.

Forest or no forest, it is described as "Romans was used to fight in the open field, and could not adjust their tactics (formations, weapons) to the heavy vegetation".

yeah i think so since they were barbarians the need for a lose formation was needed if they fought like kelts that wielded long swords that needed space so they can swing their swords for a strong attack that could break the enemies shield or the dude himself

I can see the need to define it for the purposes of depicting it in a game.
That said, surely a horde isn't so much a military formation?
Its more of a gigantic angry mob..........armed to the teeth.....with each trying to goad his neighbour & himself into a frenzy, prior to unleashing all that fury on the enemy?

    Intimidating, but not organised.

Absolutely stunning. I believe I could forsake my Greek/Parthian subjects to lead such fine warriors. Awesome work as always!

If im correct its because like kelt having long swords and wielding them in battle u need some space if the group is to close they cant use their long swords to their full potential with swinging that sword steong enough they could cut off a mans arm or the shield that protects them thats why they were feroucious and a problem to the romans science the first met each other as enemies.
