    Default Post Reform Units

I've reached the Marius reforms and can now train Legionnaires, but is that it? There are no other infantry, no archers, one type of cavalry... does this appear later, or do I need to try another mod?

I have all military buildings. I ecpected infantry with testudo abilty, and square sheilds. I know the 'plate-mail' armour came later than the chainmail, is this included in the later game with more units or am I stuck with what I have now?

    Thanks in advance.

It depends on the region. After the Marian reforms you should get the standard legionnaires in any city with a provincil barracks. If the region has roman citizenship you will also be able to train the 1st cohort. You should still be able to get the AOR troops for that particular region.

Regarding "plate-mail" armour (lorica segmenta), this was historically indtroduced in much later times, somewhen in 1st century AD and so was the "testsudo" formation. By the way I really love lorica segmenta but since this is RT-realism it wouldn't be really accurate have it in this time period. Also historically legionnaries were trained only in Rome and Capua and supporting troops such as archers ,cavalry and spearmen came from distant parts of empire. But basicaly once you got Marius reform and you are able to train superb heavy legionnaries, you don't need more than 6-10 cohorts per legion.

It kind of feel dumb of the Roman Army not having any archers at all....

I wondered if the Romans only relied on ballista/catapults w/o archers to take on the barbarians...

They did use archers. They just didn't recruit them in Italy. Such support troops were usually hired on spot (mercs) or in regions famous for their archery (Cretans/Syrians f.e.). Same goes for cavalry.

The reason the romans didn't use archers was that they didn't really see the point of them. They could beat pretty much anyone with their heavy infantry. It was only when they came up gainst the archer and cavalry heavy armies of Parthia that the romans consisdered using more missile troops.

Oh man, that means I'll lose my Velites.

Maybe I shouldn't trigger the Reforms...

    Welcome to the forum, LGoofball!

No, definitely trigger the reforms. You'll have to work a little harder to keep yourself supplied with skirmishers, but it's worth it. It's much less of a pain than having to try to keep your velites, hastati, principes, and triarii in roughly the correct proportions. Besides, the Roman Army really did use a lot of local troops as skirmishers, and I've always thought that different regionalized armies gave the game more flavor than 10 identical ones.

Usually make armies (legions) of 6 8 legioonaries , 2 velites and 1 general , 1 Equites or / 2 equites . Usually no backup , unless its a faction wipe thing so im sending 1 legion to the most troubled zone and then backup with AoR , mercs or another legion if thats 2 hot !

BtW it seems the Marius Legions carry more pilas , i mean they seem to last more at throwing salvo then the old Hastati and Principies.
