Historical Battle maps inaccurate
According to a documentery i watched some days ago, a Swedish archaeologist team, an ukrainian team, and a Russian one, have been doing intense excavations at the old fields outside of Poltava, where the great battle once stood.
These excavations gave some very interesting results, they had major problems locating the russian redoubt line, and also problems in finding the place of the final phase of the battle.
However, after intense searching, they found Russian musket balls, and the archaeologists started to search more infront of the location of these balls, and they found an extreme ammount of musketballs, only russian ones, they also found pieces of swedish uniforms and russian cannonballs.
But, the really strange thing was, that the location of the final phase of the battle was much much further away than on the old maps of the battle, this can mean that the Swedes advanced a longer distance and perhaps even reached the Russian camp, ( However this is very doubtful) Or the Russian camp laid much further away than the maps shows.
Even more strange is this, The Russian redoubt line was according to the russians formed as a T, an invention of Peter the great, this however is false according to these excavations, it was a normal redoubt line, however supported by more lines of redoubts.
So the T redoubt line was problaby a lie created to glorify Peter the greats tactical brilliance.
The original maps of the battle;
